I love my .22s, all of them, but they are in a sort of "semi retirement", nowadays. Use to use a .32 percussion but now rely on my .36 flintlock. I love the challenge and have used nothing but flintlocks for deer also.
Now, that looks like fun. Never have hunted squirrel. But there were a couple running around while I was on my Sunday morning walk this week, easy pistol shot range, or when I first saw'em, easy .22 rifle range.
Very nice thread, guys!!! I'm starting a new job next Monday, and have the rest of the week off, so I'm planning a "run away from home" hunting trip up NE of Austin tomorrow through whenever-I-get-back-home. The WMA I'm heading out to is limited to squirrel, rabbits, coyotes, etc (shotgun only) so hopefully I'll have some pics to post when I get back. Congrats to all of you and you succesful time in the woods...That's what it's all about!
Thank you, and yes we did. This hunt was especially memorable because I took one of my best friends for the first time who had never hunted before and he was hooked. He really enjoyed the experience. Especially the eating part lol.
After posting the 4 squirrels in an earlier post, I wanted to prove that I really only used the shotgun because of the rain. I took Friday off and shot four more with my .22 mag. It was one of the most productive 2 hour hunts I've ever had. Got four, and missed at least that many, and saw many others. What a challenge with a rifle, even on a great day...
I haven't squirrel hunted this much in years, and forgot how fun it was.
As another user mentioned already, small game opened Saturday here in MN. Took my first squirrel EVER this afternoon. Grew up within city limits and family didn't hunt. Now I rent in the country and family is getting back into shooting sports.
Went to let the dog out of his kennel and there was a squirrel starting up the tree, so I went back to the house and fetched my single shot 22. By the time I came back, she was way up in the tree. Miraculously, I caught her in the side of the head. Dog thought presents were raining from the sky when Mrs Squirrel dropped straight out of the tree and into the kennel. Needless to say, my first squirrel skinning didn't go as well as planned. Oh well, I guess I just have to go back out tomorrow and get a few more to put in the stew.
Hunting squirrel is one of the best ways to sharpen your overall hunting skills. And besides, it's just plain fun (not to mention they make for a tastey treat). Looking forward to the pics!
Not traditional small game compared to most the pics on this thread but still "small game" in a sense. I got these guys last year I'v been deployed since January and get back around Christmas and plan on going out ASAP.
Went out today to try and call some predators in the pines. No luck, except I almost got ran over by a deer. She was coming HARD! I did manage to shoot a few squirrels though [smilie=icon_mrgreen.gif]
