Gosh golly and gee-whiz the answers here are all over the board.

During the course of my life I have carried some pretty cheap blades....the cheapest being when I was warned to not have one at all.

Remember when decent men's shirts had collar staves? How about an injector razor blade taped to the back of one or both collar staves or even carefully wrapped and replacing one or both staves. For a bit I had one on a bit of plastic I used as a backer to Army insignia on my collar.

Got to admit it was cheap, and I felt like all I might get away with and did.

The next step up was a single edge razor like folks today only use in cheap paint and window scrappers stuck into the spot where your heel meets the sole of your shoe....it helps if this was back when shoes had leather soles and the heel was nailed on. At least one brand fit the back of a GI brass belt buckle and stayed in place with duct tape ('hunnered mile an hour tape) for weeks.

Beat not having any blade!

Part of the time as enlisted I kept on my dog tag chain a little all metal folder with a cap lifter and 3/4 of cutting edge right next to my P38 C rat Can opener. Naturally I carried other knives as well, but that one never got commented on even when being ordered to strip down in the field to be "bathed" via a forest fire truck....there is an experience not to be repeated!

I have been in some classes where at the shout of "Knife Check!" it seemed half the knives that came out were three didgit bits of steel and the rest surely a decent meal out for two. The most memorable being one full of LEOs from up and down the east coast that freaked when my 40 year old Parker zinc handled Balysong flick flacked opening and most of them had to be calmed down as apparently outside Florida a lot of places think them gravity knives.

I think it is great that folks can spend as much as they want on a quality knife.....

I on the other hand find that the more expensive the knife the more likely I seem to loose it so I keep it cheap.

EDC is still that Coast BX309 from a few years back we talked about on here. (see, cheap and still here)

Second rule of "knife fighting" is Have a sharp thing... first is stay out of knife fights!
