I was following the thread that was started a week or so ago stating that Piers Morgan would be at a gun shop, Tactical Firearms, in Katy, Texas.

Well here is a link to the video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUTRbMOb_4Y

Overall, I thought the owner handled the interview pretty well and didn't let Piers talk over him very much... Couple things I didn't like, though...
1) At 2:30, I would have corrected him about the Newtown shooting and said, "actually, the AR-15 that was on-scene was found in the trunk of the vehicle and never used."
2) The owner states that he wouldn't recommend the AR-15 for home defense? I mean, sure a shotgun is great, but from what I've been told, .223/.556 rounds typically do not penetrate walls very well, due to tumbling and fragmenting upon impact?

And I had to giggle a little bit when Piers said, "and that's a 30-bullet magazine?"

At least he didn't say 30 bullet "clip". That would have made some folks here totally insane.

I respectfully disagree. I winced throughout that interview with the shop owner. A pistol grip shotgun as a defense weapon... Firing from the hip no less. My limited experience indicates that a proper stocked shotgun is far better for defense and an AR is better yet. That guy did us no favors.

Apparently, you would be wrong. The theory that the AR-15 was not used has been floated for weeks, but does not match the wounding, and is based on a preliminary press report. NOTHING substantive has backed up that assertion.

There is some non-zero chance that it is true, but until all the findings are released -- which will still be months yet, probably -- we should not repeat that theory.

Looking like fools who did exactly what we claim the other side does (latching onto one bit of unconfirmed preliminary reporting and repeating it like gospel) doesn't help our cause.

Sam the only reason I protested the use of the AR was I watched the police remove it from the killers car and the head of the state police saying that is where they recovered it. But as you said not all the facts are out and it remains to be seen how it happened.

When Morgan brought up the military storming in and and confiscating guns, saying it would never happen, the shop owner should have suggested that Morgan do some research on post-Katrina New Orleans.

the video clearly shows it's a SHOTGUN that is being removed from the trunk.

If still in dought, get your eyes checked.

And if your watching it on your computer screen, put it on a real screen and look again.

He should have been told "NO Your not a US citizen, in good standing".

There is nothing to indicate that Morgan is "not in good standing" as far as being lawfully-permitted to purchase a firearm, either from a dealer, or from a private seller.
American citizenship is not a requirement. Lawful US residence is.

OP - .223 rounds zip just fine through drywall and insulation (depends on the kind of insulation of course, we don't have anything meaningful in our walls here in FL). You're spot on about framing materials of course.

The FFL can decline any sale he doesn't feel good about. And I wouldn't feel good about selling a popgun to Piers Morgan.

I was hoping you were going to tell us that he so loved shooting that he'd purchased two assault rifles for target shooting back home.

Sounds like it's time for the Box O' Truth.

XM-193 did not fragment when shot into drywall walls. It penetrated 4 walls, just like buckshot.

Would have been nice since Piers mentioned how powerful the AR felt, if the shop owner had handed him a bolt action .30-06 with a full power load for comparison.

In another interview the gun store owner said ""they lied". He has the original unedited tapes from the CNN interview, "he had his own hi def sound and video running". He will be releasing the undoctored version soon. This was on that guy's show who does the radio and tv show in Texas.
He also has been on Morgans show, "sam "something", but it appeasr that they altered some of the tape to have it come out the way they wanted to portrey if instead of how it happened.

+1 Solo; we did the test to settle a 'round the fire debate with varying .223 loads (full metal, ballistic tip, etc., all 55 grain) with varying sheetrock widths at our hunting camp once. Hot knife through butter.

Isnt this the same jackwagon (LGS) that tossed us under the bus a few months ago concerning online sales and ammo?

I know Sam1911 already addressed it but I have to make a point. Please Please Please stop repeating #1. It makes the gun cause lose credibility and makes it harder for us to defend our positions. It needs to stop. When we make senseless claims like people just turn you off. Thank goodness the gun shop owner was smarter than that.

The firearm retrieved from the car was a Saiga-12.
