leeharrysouth. Bluehawk had a good suggestion on calling Cabela's and having one inspected.
Yes some folks believe the wedge needs to be set with a mallet and used to adjust the barrel cylinder gap and end up unintentionally damaging their gun. With some machining background you understand that a wedge which is an incline plane is a powerful tool and could easlily over power that shallow taper and wallow it out. Force the barrel on with the wedge and you get the famous Uberti pie shaped barrel cylinder gap.
Correcting the situation is best. The way rcflint describes is the neat way of doing it. The simple way is to take two #6 washers and measure their total thickness. Drop them in the arbor hole and slide the barrel onto the gun then with your dial calipers or a feeler guage measure the gap between the barrel lug and frame. Subtract this from the thickness of the two washers and you have the needed thickness of the plug. You can generally find one of the #6 washers that is very close to right and stone it down a bit and JB weld it to the end of the arbor or in the bottom of the arbor hole. That cures the problem.

Bluehawk does have a great sugestion. I have read nothing but praise for Cabela's customer service. And they do have great prices. It sounds as though Uberti does have a issue with the old navy. Not to be wavering, but, maybe I need to think a little more about a Uberti or Pietta. I do have a macinist background, but, I despise having to fix something I just bought brand new. I guess it is the principle of the matter. Pietta seems to have no out of the box functional problems. At least none that I have read about. You have all gave me many great points. I thank you.

Either company is quite capable of producing a lemon at the drop of a hat. One of the problems with product reviews on forums is that we tend to forget that one gun does not a population make. You CAN get a bad Pietta - it has happened, just as a bad Uberti turns up on occasion.
