I have been toying with purchasing a Pietta1858 Remington .44. I have read a bit about them and some folks say that Pietta cylinders are bored smaller than bore size.

What do you gurus of pietta 1858 Remingtons say is your experience with the cylinder bore to barrel bore diameters?

I’m not a guru. I have owned fewer than ten or so, half of them were Shooters Model Remingtons and those chambers run right at .456”. All of the others, Remingtons and 1860’s, were .446-449“ and they often varied from one chamber to the next. The most current of these are were manufactured prior to 2010 or so. I have no idea what they are like these days…

Aye, Thanks. I am interested in a 2016 version of the pietta 1858 Remington .44 but do not have it in hand to examine. Anyone with knowledge about the fairly recent ones pertaining to cylinder bore to barrel bore dimensions?

Don't worry about chambers being undersize. Pure lead is soft enough to bump up when it's fired.
 
Pietta (and Uberti), with some notable exceptions already mentioned, have undersized chambers as a "rule of thumb". But not so undersized, as to not engage the rifling... Some of us like to ream them to correspond to the barrel diameter, some of us like to leave them as they are and some of us don't even know of this issue and really don't care... Read more about it and decide for yourself.
 
Here's a thought or 2 on chamber size, Ruger Old Army chambers run .453 to .454. This calls for a .457 ball. Most Italian rep!icas seem to run around .447 to .450. They do vary quite a bit. Some cylinders may have as much as .003 to .004 difference in chambers. I like mine to be as close to each other in size as possible, not overly picky about what it ends up being, just want them consistent. Main thing for me is to chamfer the chamber mouths so the ball is compressed into the chamber without shaving a ring of lead off. When the barrel/cylinder gap is set to .002/.003 that lead ring can jam up the cylinder.
