I'm moving to Oahu this fall, trying to figure out the hunting laws. Hawai'i.gov is unfruitful so far. Wondering if there any HI. Pig hunters out there that can help. I know that the license is $10 and the bag is one a day. Can I use a rifle? Can I use an AR platform? I already have the CA. Ready B.S. I'm looking to take one rifle only. Not trying to put them all on the books.

Thanks for the links. I have been through all of these. I guess I should be more specific. I'm looking for the method of take on Oahu, as it varies from island to island. The second link you provided has good information, but the link about method of take is dead.
Thanks, Ed

Make sure the porker is dead. I had a friend that had one come back to full...not happy...life in his Bronco after he was driving back down one of the mountain roads.

Apparently he had shot the pig in the head and the bloody head wound made him think the pig was DRT. Turned out it was a scalp wound that had knocked the pig out. :D

Enjoy yourself and if you snow ski you'll really have a great time between the hunting...fishing...swimming...snow skiing...and beautiful environment you'll have a ball. :)

Try 2ahawaii.com for information concerning guns and hunting in Hawaii. A good group of folks.

WoodchuckII,
I lived in Hawaii for many years. First off, Hawaii is nowhere near as prohibitive as CA with regards to the AR platform. 30-round magazines are fine, no bullet button required, flash hiders, pistol grips, collapsible stocks and bayonet lugs are fine. Registration is required for all pistols and handguns bought into the state. A one year long gun permit is required to purchase rifles or shotguns and you can walk out of the store with as many as you like but have to take thrm to the police station to register within 3 days. A permit to acquire (14 day wait) is required for all handgun purchases. I would regularly buy two or more on one permit to reduce the hassle. You can buy as many handguns on one permit as you want. HPD were always polite, friendly and very interested and enthusiastic about firearms. ARs can be used for hunting pigs and you can hunt all year round with numerous zones to choose from on Oahu and other islands. You can hunt with dogs too.

As for skiing, you'll need to be hardcore for that. It's not like heading up to Tahoe for the day.

One more tip, check out OGC Tactical .... best gun shop in Hawaii with good, knowledgeable people.

BS! Almost every gun store in Hawaii sells 30-round AR mags to civilians. Security Equipment doesn't. Point out a single case of anyone prosecuted for owning/using 30-round magazines. The only people who need to tread lightly are those owners of AR machine pistols that were grandfathered when the pistols were banned in the state. For them, possession of both an AR pistol and an AR magazine with a capacity greater than 10 rounds is a misdemeanor. If the pistol has said magazine inserted it's a felony.

OP, good luck in your journey.

I hear them oinkers go mighty fine with some fresh pineapple and BBQ sauce!

Thanks for all of the replies! 1858, great info. Exactly what I was looking for! The firearm laws in Hawai'i I am pretty familiar with, it's the d.f.g laws that are unclear. If you have ever tried to navigate a Hawaii.gov site you know what I'm talking about. I'm looking forward to hunting some hog! But first it's off to Vermont (the homeland) to take out some whistle pigs.
Thanks again all!
Ed

My wife and I did a long series of ziplines outside Hilo today and the amount of damage pigs do was amazing. The ground was torn up all over the place.

Our zip guides were all pig hunters and they use ARs.

They really do cause a lot of damage. Not surprising that those guys in Big Island are all hunters. It's country out there around Hilo and Ka'u. Great people. I used to play music with an ukulele player from Pahala and spent some time out there. So many people hunt and fish. Kinda reminded me of Vermont, minus the accents;). Oahu has so many people, so I'd imagine that it has to have some different regs.

Yikes Bexar! That would freak me out having the pig wake up!

My thought on pig hunting safety and "being sure it's completely dead, not knocked out" is to have a knife and stab it in the heart to be extra sure before you load it into your truck. Though not sure what the laws in Hawaii are on knives that big.

If Hawaii had more sane firearms laws they would have more hunters and less wild hogs ruining the rainforest there.
Wake up to reality Hawaii! This problem is fixable!
