Pinned s&w 686?

A friend of mine recently bought (Italy) a 686 with a pinned 6" barrel after seeing the pix on the net. This guy owns a gunshop and collects S&W. Now that finally the pistol is in his hands, he thinks the pinned barrel is not original and that it has been professionally done by a gunsmith. His reasons are that both the size of the pin and its location are different from what is normally seen on other S&W revolvers.
The question for the local experts is: have you ever heard of pinned barreled 686?

you would have to check the serial number for the year it was made. S & W stopped pinning barrels around 1981 or so. in this time frame they also stopped recessing the chambers on the magnum calibers. However S & W also used up the parts they had on hand so it is possible to find a pinned barrel with non-recessed chambers or have recessed chambers and a non-pinned barrel.
