I'll be in town next weekend, and I'm interested in dropping in with some friends to pop off a few. Any recommendations from the locals?

Yay intarweb! Please to be deleting multiple threads. Thanks.

Reed's Indoor shooting range right off 101 is the place to go in the area, unless you want rifles which is out door and I am not sure.

Reed's is nice. I haven't been there in year though.

I normally shoot at Targetmasters in Milpitas because its closer to my office and that make lunch more enjoyable.

I shoot at Reeds. It's pretty nice during the day midweek, but I don't know how crowded it is on weekends.

Sunnyvale Rod & Gun is open Saturdays 9-5 if you're looking for an outdoor range, but rumor has it that it gets pretty crowded. I keep meaning to head up there, but my house remodel keeps getting in my way....

That's my biggest concern. At home Monday is my "range day" and I don't care for crowds. I think wherever I go will be pretty well loaded up on a friday evening / Sat tho.

Could be. But then again, this IS the Bay Area. Who knows what people find to do on Fridays and Saturdays. :)

I asked the guys at Reeds once when their busy times are, and they said it's pretty unpredictable. But at least they have 20 lanes in two ranges, so you probably won't ever have to wait that long to get a lane.

There's target masters west in Milpitas, but that might be a bit out of your way.

It's where I used to go when I lived in the area.

Reeds is it for San Jose, CA. HWY101 & San Thomas.

Clean and well-run. They also conduct pistol and shotgun courses there.

Stay away from Targetmasters, I've observed too many breaches of basic firearms safety rules by shooters because of unattentive staff. I no longer shoot there.

I'm a San Jose native, and I can help you out with this one.

Depending one where you'll be, Los Altos Rod and Gun Club Range may not be too much of a drive. (From my parents' house it's about 20 minutes, it isn't really in Los Altos.) It's an outdoor range with 7, 25, 50, and 100 yard lanes as well as a shotgun area. Fairly big, not too crowded, lots of light. $15 if I remember correctly.
Here's the address: 14750 Skyline Blvd, Los Gatos, CA
and phone number: (408) 867-3106

There's also San Jose Municipal Rifle Range at
1580 S 10th St, San Jose, CA
(408) 275-1738
I've never been there, it may be members only. Give them a call though.

Another one: San Leandro Rifle & Pistol Range
This may be more of a drive for you (probably about 45 minutes to an hour).
It's at 3001 Davis St, San Leandro, CA
510) 638-9605
Apparently this range is part indoor, part outdoor, although I haven't actually been there myself.

Having said all of this, I highly recommend Los Altos Rod and Gun. I did most of my shooting up at my buddy's house on private land, but when I did go to the range this was it. The drive isn't terrible, and you get to see some awesome scenery. The staff is great too; had a guy help me out with a friend's broken/jammomatic .22 once, and they even gave us a free pass to come back since we couldn't get the rifle to work (we did get it clear, however). The RO's really jump on unsafe behavior too. I felt very comfortable at all times.

I find this thread to be very depressing. When I left California in 1970 Coyote Point in San Mateo was one of the nicest outdoor pistol and rifle ranges imaginable. I wonder what happened to it.

Coyote Point is still there, it is just a bit of a drive from San Jose. The limitation is that it is a long-gun and .22lr pistol only now.
Also, if you plan on shooting pre-ban rifles, you have to show proof of registration before you are allowed to use the range.

Silicon Valley has several firing ranges (including one in Sunnyvale) & many on the outskirts.

Reeds just happens to be very convenient & located near all highways.

Metcalf (Santa Clara County Field Sports Park) is south on 101 at the edge of the city. Outdoors to 200yds.
