On pistols with internal locks, are all keys from the same manufacturer interchangeable? I've never owned a gun with an internal lock and, at 59 years old, doubt I ever will.

Usually the pistol lock keys are proprietary by the manufacturer. For example most Taurus keys will unlock other Taurus internal locks on different models by the same company. The internal lock on my HR is an actual teethed key that were all the same so I can buy a new one if I ever felt the need to use it.

My Taurus Mil Pro PT145 SA/DA model has an integral lock. But I think the locks were originally meant to protect against unintended discharges by small children so a common key would not be a concern.

I never needed to use the lock on my Taurus as my children were fully educated on firearm safety before I bought it. I personally prefer gun safes and proper gun safety education over mechanical integral locks.

I mean, what if it ever fails or I forgot to unlock it when I need to shoot the pistol in a hurry?

I unlocked the lock on my Bersa in 2004 put key in box and never looked back . It gets points I guess when importing a gun.
I have never heard of a Bersa lock giving any trouble in all the years I had Bersa boards.

Internal locks are commonly called "lawyer locks" that like to get brought up in anti gun states like NY, NJ, CA whenever a kid finds a handgun and shoots it. Most manufacturers make models with and without the locks to basically play CYA. I have a few firearms with the locks, but never use them. The locks, handguns still get plenty of use.

My Ruger Mark III Target has a thing to lock the safety on that looks like an allen wrench, except it's a pentagon, not a hexagon. I think I've seen a similar tool somewhere else, but there's no obvious cuts in it that would make the key that came with my gun unique to my gun specifically.

I'd imagine this depends on the manufacturer, though. I've seen video of a Bersa that looked like it had a tiny little barrel lock in there, similar to the ones you'd see on a bicycle lock.

The lock on my Bersa Thunder has never been used since I've had it, but the key will unlock other Bersa guns equipped with the lock. It's the only one of many guns I own that has a lock.
