My middle son Mark is in the Army, presently doing an unaccompanied tour in Korea. He comes back to Ft Riley, KS in August, gets about a week at home the goes to Patrick AFB for a school until December.

He missed hunting last year and he told me he plans on taking his boat, fishing gear, bow, shotgun and rifle and trying to spend his weekends doing some hog and deer hunting.

Is there anyone here from the area or who has hunted the area who can give us some insights to the area?

Hi Jeff. My Dad was stationed at Riley during WWII. They packed out mules to test all kinds of equipment under all kinds of equipment. I used to work out of Canaveral and Orlando. There are several WMA west of Patrick and Merritt Island offers good duck hunting. Check out www.myfwc.com.

Unless he's a duck hunter, he's out of luck over there except for a few special quota hunts on Merritt Island.

If he will have access to a shallow draft boat and motor, he can hog hunt on the St. John's River marshes but that's about it.

There is not much real close to Patrick as far as hunting - it's pretty built up around there. There is waterfowl north and south. Down around Palm Bay there is lots of duck hunting but it's hard to get into without an airboat or a boat with a mud motor. There are some WMA's in that part of Florida but the deer population isn't real high and the get pounded pretty good. Lot's of pigs around, however. Hunting without a lease with feeders or dogs is hard.

Lot's of fishing opportunities. Patrick AFB owns the beach that runs along the base and the surf fishing can be pretty good depending on the time of the year. The base MWR used to run surf fishing classes (might still) when I was living down there.

On highway 520, a couple of miles west of St Johns river, there is a large wma or some-such. I can't see it on google maps for some reason, but it is there!

Found it: Tosohatchee Wildlife Management Area
