I don't know how many folks at THR are from central Alabama, but I thought I'd throw a heads up for those that might be interested in getting in on planning of this.

http://www.alashooting.com/

Looks like the developers of a proposed multi-use outdoor facility are inviting the public to comment. The meeting is this month (2/27/12) at 6:30 pm at the old Ritz theater in Talladega. The park is called Top Trails. http://www.toptrails.net/

The property is at an old decommissioned Army ammuniton depot just north of Talladega. I've been following this a while. Not only will this be a shooting range, but it's main use will be as an offroad park.

Any way, just a heads up.

Note: Moderators.....if this is in the wrong area of the boards, please move it. Thanks.

Gun Nerd,

Me too. I'm closer to Talladega than I am to Bham. The only other public range is Shepard Branch below Talladega. Two in the same county will be nice.

Shepard branch is a 100 yard range. It is a federal range in the Talladega National Forest. Honor system per car is a $3 fee. It's on Hwy 77 between Talladega and Ashland. No range officer on duty, but I guy does come by occasionally to check the honor of shooters and to collect the money from the lock box

Just in case some of you didn't understand....the range at the www.alashooting.com is only in the planning stage. The initial planning meeting is tommorow. I have to be at work during that meeting, so I won't be able to make it.

The other existing federal range is called Shepard Branch. Went there today to wring out my new G23 and a Lone Wolf coversion barrel. For those of you who might have a GPS here are the coordinates for the entry road off 77. N33 20.432 W086 1.519 Or just cut and paste the coordinates into Google Maps. Note that Hwy 77 has been recently straightened through that area so a car nav unit may be confused while routing.

Yes, I understood that it was in the developmental stages. Thanks for clearing that up though in case there were any that did not understand. I hope they do build it because then I will have to check it out.

Thanks for posting this! I've been looking for a good place to start shooting long range rifle and to start doing some more practical shooting. This seems like it would be a great place for that. Hopefully the meeting goes well and we get a new range!

I would like to do something like that on a weekend sometime. There are four shooting tables. Each table will accomodate two sitting shooters. On nice weekends you may have to wait to shoot.

It must be an OK place. One time I was up there I met some cops from Geogia. They were shooting some full auto stuff. They told me they had nothing like this back at home, so they drove all the way to Shepard to shoot from time to time. I found that strange because I thought cops would have a local FOP range for shooting. Also, if you have a 4WD there are plenty of FS roads to explore in the area.

One thing that bothers me is that Shepard Branch is that it is a public range and folks sometimes trash it up (leaving target materials). I always take a few minutes to clean up more than I brought. They do have a trash can by the shooting stations. Sometimes folks follow my lead. I'd just hate to see it closed from abuse. I usually bring a few Walmart bags. I'll ask while the range is cold "Is that your target?" If no, then in goes in the sack.

Other than that issue it is a good place. Folks may leave trash on the line, but never felt uncomfortable as far as safety goes.

For those interested in shooting, especially long range, check out the match schedule at www.scssa.org, which is a private club that opens to the public for matches. It is off South Shades Crest road in Hoover. Awesome facility.
