Hi all, I've had a fairly involved revolver project bouncing around in my head for a while now. This would involve heavy cosmetic alteration to a Ruger Super Redhawk, including:
  • Engraving on frame extension, frame and cylinder
  • Reprofiling barrel to an octagonal cross section
  • Fabricating a steel underbarrel web lug and brazing it on
  • Replacing front sight with a gold bead
  • Rebluing the entire gun
  • Trigger job, plus darkening the hammer and trigger
  • Making and fitting "western-style" wood grips
I know this is going to be an expensive project going in and I'm willing to take this to several different craftsmen to get this done. I've also never had high-end custom work done on guns before so I'm shopping around for some recommendations. Thanks in advance.

Just out of curiosity... Sounds like your trying to built a Remington 1875 looking creation? Am I right?

I don't know of any that would try to recreate a fantasy movie gun out of a Ruger. Ever hear the expression, "you can't get there from here"? A single action grip on a DA is not going to work and the result wouldn't look anything like the movie gun anyway. You'll be better off and money ahead to get the factory 1858 cartridge conversion, have it engraved and live with the fact that it's a single action with a loading gate.

Call Mark Hartshorne about the gunsmith work, he is an outstanding revolversmith and machinist. Joe DePasquale does excellent engraving work. David Clevinger is another engraver/gunsmith to consider, he's not as well known and his prices and wait times might be more reasonable. David is doing a hot rod themed Colt Commander for me right now, he's very talented.

Making and fitting "western-style" wood grips

You had me right up to this point. If by "western-style" wood grips you mean a single action grip frame on a Ruger Super Redhawk...then you lost me.

Go back and reread post #5 by CraigC. I believe he pretty much answered how this particular alteration would just not work.
