Please Tell Me Everything About The Ruger Bearcat

I just found out this week that my wife and I are pregnant with our first child, and immediately filled out paperwork and bought a Ruger New Bearcat in stainless. I plan on taking it out to take pictures, and then putting it back in the box until the child is old enough to take it out for the first time. If anyone has a sheet or two of rust inhibiting paper lying around, I would greatly appreciate it (or buy it if necessary). What should I know about this gun? What should I do to prepare it to sit in the case for 5+ years? Thanks in advance!!!

A stainless gun should not have problems in 5 or 10 years just kept in the factory paper if kept in a cool, dry place. If you are concerned, you can get a tube of RIG and cover the gun. For security purposes, I suggest a lock or keeping the cylinder separate from the rest of the gun.

just put a nice coat of oil on it, w/ what? wax paper, isnt that what some pistols come w/ i know my s&w had a small sheet of it inside of the box. I dont think it will need any other maintaining, maybe get a few silica gel packets and put them in the case w/ it.

Just take it out once a year, wipe it down and inspect it each time. Good to go.

I plan on putting some rust inhibiting paper in there if I can find some, but all it came in was a plastic bag inside the case. I have some S&W paper, but it would probably rust the gun just out of spite. I plan on oiling it with CLP Collector's lube, but I'll take pictures first.

You know you'll have the dang thing out a half dozen times a year just to admire and giggle about how much fun it's going to be when the little one gets to go shoot it, just wipe it down with CLP before you put it back.

I thought along the same lines when my son was born, but went about it a bit differently. I discussed it with my wife and she agreed I could go out the day he was born and buy him a good solid bolt action 30-06 for when he became a man. You should have seen the look on the Mother in Laws face when I left the hospital about two hours after he was born to buy a dang rifle. Son has no idea it's his and won't until I think he's ready for it and then will be told it was bought the day he was born. He's 11 now and has a .22 rifle and his sister has a Bearcat of her own but that Savage Bolt gun comes out every now and again to get a little wipe down. Good luck with the little one, you're life will forever improve.

My Dad did the same thing with my brother and I. It's been over 30 years and he still hasn't turned them over to us

Egg, it's for a good cause, so unless Ruger advises me to shoot it when I call them it will only get taken out to oil it. If that is the biggest sacrifice I have to make, I'll be doing ok.

Best thing you can do for the Bearcat, your son, and yourself is to shoot it and clean it regularly!!

By the time your son is old enough to practice, Daddy will have plenty of practice and will be significantly better at the finer nuances of shooting the Bearcat.

BTW, I have 4 year and 2 year old grandsons and recently fondled a Bearcat in SS at the Bass Pro shop. I could not imagine a safer and more ideal training handgun than the Bearcat. And, you know what? If I get one a couple years before the boys are old enough to shoot, I plan to break it in for them by shooting the @*?!!*# out of it!

The Bearcat is an excellent starter pistol built for little hands. It was my first pistol also (I was a little older). Mine is a steel model that I bought new in 1964 for $39.95 at a F.W.Woolworth store. Both my daughters started out with it. Best of luck with the young'un and his first pistol. Quantrill
