Point / Instinctive shooting?

IMO, "point shooting" is made out to be some kind of miracle that can only be performed by the anointed ones. The reality, I think, is that it really is nothing special. A bit of practice and just about anyone will be pretty good at it.

I agree with this.

Point shooting originated as a method of training large numbers of people rapidly in defensive shooting at close distances. Fairbairn and Sykes considered a hit to be a shot placed anywhere on a man sized target at 4 yards rapidly. As the shooter improved all shots could be placed in the torso. Teacup sized groups or all shots placed into a playing card and such was never the point.

In the last couple of decades a few writers have attempted to make this fairly simple thing in to a "system". I think this has been a mistake.

Trained and experienced shooters can do a lot of amazing things with handguns. Jordan could shoot aspirins out of the air, something most folks will never be able to do. The fellas that worked up point shooting were aiming to train the inexperienced to survive a gunfight in close quarters.

Got formal instruction from Uncle Sam in the late 70's. It was called Quick Kill. We started out with BB guns and after the istructor thought we were ready, we got to do a few rounds with an M16. Our instructor's mantra was "Empty your mind, and that should be easy for you worthless pieces of whale ****, and visualize the projectile hitting the target". We had a female who couldn't qualify until they replaced the standard butt stock with a short one. After that, she was hell on wheels. I thought I was doing good to hit a dime 7 out of 10 times thrown in the air at 25m. She would do it with boring regularity. Our instructor won more than one case of his favorite libation that day from his fellow instructors.

At 4 yards, shooting bent-arm elbow high, or other non-sight-use variations, the grouping really ought to be able to be covered by a Tea Cup, if done in a fairly rapid fire double action mode, one hand...

Relax...be 'loose', be 'rubbery'...bent knees...but iron 'Grip' in fore and aft, no side pressure in the gripping...even, methodical steady pulls without stopping or worrying on whether the Revolver is pointing to the "10 Ring"...or caring when it fires...and...the Bullets will go where your Eye is 'on' the Target.

Oyeboten I appreciate the advice. I mentioned that I was moving when I shot the target pictured. I drew and shot while moving laterally to the target, 5 rounds in 2 seconds on average. I'm not that good a shot to place them all in a teacup or even a tea saucer while moving and firing one handed. A serving plate maybe if I'm lucky. Might be handier to just throw the plate though. :)
