Point me to a carbine/car gun.

My opinion is and SKS. Stripper clips are nothing and you'll have a battle proven rifle with much more accuracy and "punch" than a pistol caliber rifle.

i'd vote kel-tec sub or su-16, i think your hard pressed to find a better gun to suite this nitch in that price range

i'd also say a shotgun, very affordable and they get small with an 18in barrel and a youth stock on em. . . .

show me a vest that'll stop a 12gauge slug and ill show you a target you shouldnt be engaging by yourself!

You can get a winchester 1200 for about $125. Reblue it and have to choke bored to modified. Load alternating slugs and buck. A pistol cartridge carbine won't have sufficient energy to defeat body armor. Head shots at rapidly moving folks intent on killing you can be tough to pull off.

Oh yeah, an SKS has a bayonet so when you run our of ammo you've still got a point to get across.

I think there are a lot of ways to go here.

However to keep it simple I'd vote for a used 12 guage shotgun (18" barrel) or a used marlin/winchester lever gun (16" barrel, caliber is up to you).

It would already have more than a few miles under it's belt and would not be a thing of beauty.

It would be a gun I could drop on the ground and it wouldn't bother me; something I could pick up, wipe down, and put back in the trunk.

decision made

today i picked up a SAR-1 ak-47, it came with a 40 & 20 round mag and a 75 round snail drum as well as 120 rounds of ammo for 335$

i think it will do.

Now that a choice is made, I can add my .o2 cents....

I can't wait to finish my ar pistol just for this reason.......A rifle caliber gun that is classified as a pistol and so therefore is capable of being concealed in my vehicle loaded and ready if needed(just like my other concealed carry arms go)

Sometimes it pays off with added benefits to do the hoop jumping as in this instance  A little too beefy to carry on me though, but the fact is if I could conceal it, I could carry it if I wanted to :neener: ! Talk about making a brady member freak! I can see half of Komiefornia drop dead from seeing the news of a "justified shooting" with what is so clearly an "evil assault machinegun pistol and why does it have that bayonnet?" :neener:

I'd say go with an SKS.

If you must have pistol caliber, you could always look at Mech Tech Systems.

Their Carbine conversion unit allows you to slip a 1911 or Glock frame into a hefty blow-back operated upper.

You can pick them up for about $350. I like the idea of a 16" barrel on a Glock 20. 15 rounds of Double Tap 10mm in a shoulder-stabilized platform. Sounds like good fun. You can also keep your slide around and have a pistol when you want it.

I've had M1 Carbines in my cars 24/7 for years but after that shooting the other day I think I'll replace the Carbines with something that's sure to go through a vest.
The SKS with a 16 inch barrel will probably be my first choice.

One Suggestion + One Question

Suggestion: Rock River Arms AR15 police versions (no ban).

Question: If it's going to be in the trunk of your car most of the time, how exactly are you going to secure it from thieves?

I have thought of making a thin box and painting it the color of the metal of the inside of the trunk, and fastening it to the top of the compartment, between the trunk lid and the back seats. Use velcro straps to hold the rifle up there. Most thieves in the dark, or in a hurry, will probably never notice it up there.

The primary reason to me for a truck gun would be armored shooter scenarios, or putting down a hurt animal. For that, I want something rifle caliber, not pistol caliber. If you want to stick with pistol caliber, I would get a sub2000 with the appropriate magazine system that your handguns use.

I really want a su16, or a folding 12 ga, or a standard sks for my truck gun. I am also seriously considering a m44, enfield or used lever for a little bit less evil looking gun. My problem is finding a place to secure the gun in my Dakota extended cab :(. If anyone has an idea, feel free to share :)
