— Obama is calling on Congress to pass legislation to "reinstate and strengthen the ban on assault weapons" that was in place from 1994 to 2004.
We all know how useless the AWB was and that the FBI UCR shows violent crime, murder and firearms use in crime was falling before, during, and after the AWB and that violent crime has fallen ever since the sunsetting of the AWB. The call to "strengthen" the provisions of the misguided AWB are probably going to include a single "military" feature criteria for banning firearms so no pistol grip with magazine will be permitted.
What do we do about it? We meet with our Congressional delegation to tell them we oppose any reinstatement of an AWB, much less an even more draconian version. We write letters and mail them to our Congresscritters. We write emails and send them to our Congresscritters. We do the same for our State elected officials (Governor and Legislators) so they know we expect them to oppose these laws at the state level. We support the ILA and SAF and state 2A organizations financially and with our time. Our time will be very important in helping others oppose the coming storm of restrictions Antis will want to drown us with.
— He wants a law passed to prohibit the sale of ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds.
Redundant with the call for a new version of the AWB and equally pointless in the face of the falling violent crime rate. Our response is the same. WORK
— The administration says "Congress should finish the job of protecting law enforcement and the public by banning the possession of armor-piercing ammunition by, and its transfer to, anyone other than the military and law enforcement."
We can't purchase armor new armor piercing ammunition now so what is this supposed to mean. Is this going to mean that old "black tip" ammunition has to be destroyed? Isn't that a taking by the government? Regardless we need to be very vigilant to make sure that standard hunting and military surplus ammunition isn't included in this (remember Bobby Kennedy claiming 30.06 ammunition was "cop killing" ammo?)
— The federal government is taking executive action "to provide incentives for schools to hire school resource officers."
Pointless in my opinion in the face of the extremely rare nature of Sandy Hook shootings, but it is intended to play to those calling for it.
— "The Departments of Education, Justice, Health and Human Services, and Homeland Security will release — by May 2013 — a set of model, high-quality emergency management plans for schools, houses of worship, and institutions of higher education, along with best practices for developing these plans and training students and staff to follow them."
I can't think of an immediate criticism or reason to oppose this except for the fact that it is wasted money on a program that tries to address a problem too rate to address.

The only thing I can remotely agree with.

Congress has in recent years barred those agencies from using federal funds to "advocate or promote gun control." The White House argues that "research on gun violence is not advocacy; it is critical public health research."
We had research on gun control laws and on violent crime and the research from the NSF and CDC said the AWB and other firearms restriction laws had no conclusive impact in reducing violent crime. With the short time left to this presidency the studies will show the same thing the original ones did. Regardless, the Congress has to approve this and that fight will take place on the floor of the House and Senate.
