Posted this same question on another forum but wanted a broader answer base.

Saw one of these in a shop today and had to check it out. I recall seeing this model in the Colt catalog years back and wanting one then. had never even seen one first hand until today. Was used but in excellant condition. It's usually the other Police Positive mdoel we see and hear about so I'm wondering if there was something amiss with this model. Really debating going back and grabbing it just becasue. Any thoughts/opinions? Reasonable price?

What does it say on the barrel? There was a Colt Police Positive Special? If that is the case, why not identify it by it's correct name.
 
Looks like a Police Positive MK V. I bought one new in '94 or '95. I've seen them used for around $400 and up. Not exactly a collectors item, but they're probably not going to make any more. I like the size and weight, it shoots fine, but the trigger doesn't compare to the S&W's I've owned .
 
Are you saying the one you saw looked like that, or did you just pull an image of a PPS? The earlier ones have an exposed plunger and different grips.

People don't appreciate them enough. I had one from the 1950's that was the most accurate double action revolver I've ever owned. It would give quarter size groups at 25 yards with .38 special lead 158's. The triggers are not like a Smith's, but that doesn't mean they're bad.
 
The one I saw looks like the one I posted a picture of. I'm aware of the other style which is the Police Positive Special. (sorry 22-rimfire, I DID check some other places before posting and saw the "special" model was obviously NOT what I had seen.)

I prefer the one I first posted as I like full shrouds and grips on the later one. I do believe it was only cataloged once if I recall correctly. '94 or '95 sounds about right. $400 huh? hmmm have been told BB lists thm at $350 @95%. Well, this one I saw is $350 and I'm not sure what's inclded (box, papers, etc) but I guess filling in a 13 year old want is worth a bit right.
Think I'll make a call tommorrow. :cool:
 
The later ones aren't collector's items, but the earlier ones are. I would not pay four hundred for anything beyond the second or third issue. I've seen them for three hundred.
