RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. (AP) — Happy holidays. Now pull over to the side of the road.

Motorists may be in for a surprise if they spot flashing red lights in their rearview mirrors in this Sacramento suburb during the holiday season.

Police are stopping law-abiding motorists and rewarding their good driving with $5 Starbucks gift cards.

A traffic officer came up with the idea to "promote the holiday spirit and enhance goodwill between the traffic unit and the motoring public," police Sgt. Tim Curran said.

Local businesses donated money to buy the gift cards.

"They raised a substantial amount of money," Curran said. "They'll be pulling over a lot of people."

What happens if you pull someone over for nothing, and find something illegal?

yeah, sounds like an excuse to pull someone over for no reason
i wonder if they do the ncis check, on these fishing expiditions, "for their safety":barf:

Somehow this seems an abuse of power. I was glad to read that local businesses donated the money because I would object to tax dollars being used for this.

I would hope that there is no crime in Rancho Cordova as the police are busy stopping citizens to give them Starbucks certificates.

Is this legal? To me this seems like a cop pulling over someone to get their phone number or to talk to them.

Rancho Cordova is not far from my house, I drive thru italmost every day to get too and from work/ suppliers. I am mortified by this idea, You can bet that if I was pulled over my next stop would be the watch officers office. There is more then enough crime going on in that city( hell more then enough traffic violations) to keep thier officers occuiped. They don't need to pull over people that are obeying the CVC.

I'd have a problem with being pulled over when I'm doing nothing wrong.

Contrary to what some people seem to think, the fact that one is driving safely does not mean he has nowhere to be.

Now, if they ran my plates, got my address, and then used that to SEND me a note saying "thanks for driving safely, we noticed, here's a thank-you" that would be nice. But a stop? I don't think so. Especially as the first thing out of my mouth has to be "here's my license, here's my CHL, how do you wish to proceed?" That's not going to be a 30-second "thanks for safe driving" stop.

I have to believe that it is not reasonable to pull someone over for expressly not violating the law. This has to be the dumbest thing ever.

I'd rather be left alone, thank you very much.

What if a real emergency were to occur while the cops are out playing Santa Claus?

Only prob with that is Sacramento county does not issuse CCWs unless you are LEO, retired LEO or work for the DOJ. When I lived in placer county( right next door to sac), it was your a biz owner that some times deals in cash... here you go. when I moved to sac county and it came time to renew...not a chance in hell, the fact that I was robbed at gun point while I had my CCW( doing work at a local school, by a student) did not make a diffrence, strick policy, you can't have one.

and to find a way around that pesky probable cause constraint.

(in comically ridiculous german accent)"HALT---papers please, oohhh, veh have nothing to hide do ve?,(peeks around the car), KLAR, oh and here is der starbucks card, now move along)

My most precious right is the right to be left the heck alone. I don't want so much as a thank-you note from my government.

There is so much wrong with this, sociologically, morally, legally, that I don't know where to begin.

I got pulled over for an expired inspection sticker a couple months ago. Cop saw some shot-up targets on my back floorboard, and started asking me if I had guns in the car...
