I bought several of them. None of them cost more than $300 OTD. I was VERY happy that departments were selling their 40 caliber pistols off for peanuts.
The Sig P229 is my favorite. I got it for cheap because the slide has damaged finish. IDC, it's stainless anyway. It is a high-quality pistol. I don't think I've owned another pistol that was manufactured as well.
The Bertetta 96 is an excellent example of its genre. It's a "Frankenstein Gun" with an American DAO slide and an Italian frame. I was the only bidder for $150. Yeah, that's ridiculous.
I bought the S&W M&P in 45acp rather than 40 caliber, but I like it as much as the Glock and Beretta, maybe even better. My FiL has the 40 caliber version, and it is a tiny bit smaller, IIRC.
The Beretta PX4 that I got has a DAO trigger that isn't very good.
My FiL has been disappointed with his Springfield. I think it is an XD.
My Glock 22 was a great deal: box, two mags, barely ever shot. I paid $129 total for a conversion barrel and magazine for it, so now it's also a G17 after a 30 second swap of parts.
They aren't necessarily police turn-ins, but the Ruger P-series and the Witness polymers are pretty easy to find on GB for $250-ish. I have one of each. The Ruger is a bit "clunky", but sturdy and reliable. The Witness is excellent.
I have had very good experiences with AIM and Kings.
