Polishing a feed ramp

I have heard that toothpaste on a soft felt Dremel polishing attachment applied with a lot of patience will result in a nice mirror finish on a feed ramp.

Also heard about Jewellers Rouge, but how to apply it, and where can you find such a thing for sale.

Any advice appreciated, thanks.

I've used Flitz and a dremel polish attachment with good results.

My dremel polishing kit came with some jewlers rouge. I don't know if it correct or not, but I've just put in one of the soft polishing tips and with the tool turned on dip it into the rouge. Always gotten a nice mirror finish using this method.

Jewelers rouge is available at Ace hardware. Or probabley any hw store. costs about $4 for a lifetime supply. My dad used to let me polish his brass with it 50 years ago when he was in the army. Much finer than Flitz. works well on feed ramp. Rouge means red, don't buy any other color.

You can also use Mothers Wheel Polish..it contains Jewelers Triple E .... works great. I polished My entire Slide from brushed aluminum to Highly Polished with it ....

I usually just use a smal piece of 600 grit emery wrapped around a 1/4" dowel pin. That way I can control it better. Dremels have a nasty habit of taking off on their own and skidding across your nice blue finish.

Overheard: Be careful not to 'over round' edges... some people get over indulgent on the edges in the bullet path - imagining that this will help the feeding, perhaps.

In reality it allows the bullet to take a lower path into the chamber and can cause problems. Well, that's what I heard in regards to 1911s.

Just fire at least a 1000 rounds of ball ammo thru it,let the ball ammo polish it for you,besides,you,me,and everyone else needs the practice.:banghead:

Round wooded dowel and fine emory paper, 600 grit or finer, works for me. Same paper and a trimmed popsickle stick works great on the breach face as well.

Dremel tools: They market a rechargeable for $20 (at least at Walmart) It has 2 speeds 5 and 10 thousand rpm. It's really a "weak sister" of the A.C. model. Perfect for doing trigger face and feed ramp. Low torque on this thing means very little likelyhood of removing additional material you didn't wanna remove. Much easier to control without A.C. cord hanging off. Butt,, maybe everbody knows this.

I guess I'm a Philistine but i just strip it down and then use my finger and strips of wet and dry auto body sandpaper starting with 400 and going to 1000. I put some oil on the paper and just sand the ramp. Then I clean it down, cold blue the ramp and reassemble. Seems to work well.
