I'm considering buying a Benelli Ethos Super Sport 12ga with a Ported barrel. What gives me pause is the ported barrel. I've never had one or shot one so am completely in the dark as to the pros and cons. I'm concerned mostly about the noise factor. Do these shotguns emit more muzzle blast than conventional shotguns? I am painfully aware of what a muzzle break does to rifles and would rather not make more noise than I need to. I'll appreciate your thoughts. Thank you.

Yes, ported shotgun barrels make more noise than unproved barrels. I personally do not think they reduce recoil much. Maybe..a little less muzzle rise after the shot. Ported shotgun barrels are not as dramatic as rifle barrels because shotguns burn less powder and have much lower gas pressures. I simple will not buy a shotgun with ports. I have shot them and shot with people who own them. If I liked the gun otherwise and it was a good deal I might consider it.

If I liked the gun otherwise the ported barrel wouldn't change my opinion either way. Yes, they are a little louder, but not nearly as much as a rifle or handgun. If you're wearing ear protection you probably won't notice the difference. Bystanders who aren't wearing ear protection might notice.

They don't reduce recoil, but do reduce muzzle rise which might get you back on target a little quicker.

If I liked the shotgun and the price were right I'd buy it. I wouldn't pay more for it and if there were 2 identical guns at the same price I'd choose the non-ported gun. But if the ported gun were selling at the right price I'd go that way.

When shooting sporting clays I always have ear protection and really don’t notice much of a difference. I never compared without ear protection but it’s got to be better than a muzzle break.

My feelings on ported shotgun barrels is simple. They are a great addition to the bankroll of the porting provider.

I appreciate all the helpful feedback about ported barrels. I've never like them. Makes my decisions difficult though. I like the gun, but don't like the ports. Sheesh....now what? The good news is I have a very good Benelli Competition 12ga (the competition was replaced by the Legacy). I'll shoot it until I can decide. In the past, I just grab whichever shotgun appealed to me that day or to try out a new gun I just acquired. My goal now is to get better at the sporting clay range, so I need some consistency. Maybe an O/U?

As the shooter, porting won't bother you as much as those shooting around you. Porting may reduce felt recoil or muzzle jump maybe a few percent, not really enough to notice unless you are really sensitive to such small refinements. It mostly helps on heavy hunting shells with lots of extra power and load weight.

If anyone can provide empirical evidence that porting provides any advantage to anyone but the porting provider, please provide it now. Seriously. Solid evidence. Not, “I feel less “kick” or I think the patterns are better. Hard proof.
Ain’t there. Uglifies a barrel, noisifies the report, irritates the neighboringshooters and empties the pockets of the buyers. Just my 80 year old opinion after 60 plus years of shotgun competition.

I like porting. Have no empirical data. I do know that it helps. Using Federal Heavyweight 3.5" with 2.25 oz shot it helps in my Mossberg turkey gun. Ported vs not ported for the same price I'll go ported any day of the week. And even pay a little extra.

This is the kind of hands on info I like and can use. I particularly like the word "noisifies". Anyone who noisifies a barrel is guilty of noisfication and should be soundly thrashed and never allowed to shoot an unported barrel.

After 1 guy brought a ported barrel into my duck boat... no more ported barrels for duck hunting.

i have several clay sports shotguns with ports and non ports, as every one here wears ear protection its no problem. they are brownings and both cost the same. i here more bitches about flying cases from auto shotguns then ports.
