Post pics of your "tactical" Mosin Nagant

There were only 17 million Russian Mosin Nagants made, so they are not as rare and collectible as a Finnish Nagant.

I have a 91/30 with matching serial numbers, receiver marked 1926, so that one I am keeping pristine as possible (although I suspect the importer gave the receiver a flat black refinish job).

On the other hand, I have a Mosin-Nagant carbine with different serial numbers for receiver, bolt body, magazine floor, and butt plate. Headspace is OK so THAT one is fair game for tinkering (no historical value).

But there have been two rifles I owned, Spanish 1916 Mauser in .308 and a 91/38 Carcano, that I wish I had resisted the temptation to "sporterize" but those of us in the 1950s and 1960s were brainwashed to think "sporting purposes" not "curio and relic."
Try closer to 37 million than 17 million.

This is a pre-bubarized MN I got off neighbor for 25 bucks. Only thing I have done to it is a $15.00 scout mount (from http://www.htownimports.com/ ) that took some retrofit to make sure it is locked down solid, a yard sale $10.00 BSA pistol scope and made a leather cheek riser for it.

It loves heavy hard cast boolits and is surprisingly very accurate with same, tis my always carry truck gun.

Well, flash-bangs are uber tactical, and that's a magazine-fed flash-bang, so... :D

Some of the pictures here have left me with a question.

When you chop a mosin nagant down so that it has a barrel length less than 16in, dont you run into trouble with the BATFE regulations on SBR's?

As I understand it if you were to take an AR and mount a 12in barrel you would be violating the NFA...unless you pay the stamp and get fingerprinted, photgraphed and cavity searched...isnt this also true for other rifles? Is a mosin exempt because it is a bolt action with a fixed magazine or did someone really pay to get an NFA stamp on a Bubba'd Mosin Nagant SBR?

They paid for a tax stamp. Because they could.

Really, how can you not justify a tax stamp on cutting down $40 beater rifle for fun--which probably had a buggered bore and stock further down anyway--if you could for a $1200 rifle that remains in the exact same configuration minus a few inches?

More bang for your buck. In this case, literally.

You other guys, thanks for your... constructive comments. ;)

I am building this one. I love the way he created his Break. Now I am on the hunt for a Mosin with a good bore, none matching serial numbers, for dirt cheap of course. Anyone know where I can get an already bubbaed Mosin for less them 90 buck in Florida? (how do we spell Bubbaed?). I can get a perfect Mosin at the Gun show for $125 to $150 They are too pretty to cut the barrel. Oh I will use a regular 91/30

I am only going to cut the barrel down to 22 inch though.

qobsession -

You can get the 91/30's from J & G sales, Aim Surplus, Rguns, maybe a few other places for $69 - 79.00, if you have a C&R.-Shipping to FL is about 10-15 bucks/rifle, and if you don't have a C&R, then a FFL transfer will cost you about 15.00 - 35.00 depending on broker... Buy several at a time, and the transfer fee can be split per rifle. I'm going to order several this week., in North Florida.

RonE I am sorry your thread was killed. I was hoping more people would begin to post there modified mosin on your thread. I will be purchasing a Butt pad from the same place you got yours. It amazes me how people don't understand what we are doing. I don't want and expense gun. I want something I can play with and improve its fun, and does not hurt the pockets. When I am finish I will have $300 into it Scope $100 and bended bolt $65 and all the free mods. I will be out shooting the guys with the $700 dollar plus guns. Many people are shooting Mosin at 400 to 1000yards with out issue. It is more then accurate enough for responsible hunting of any North American Animal. Continue to enjoy yourself.

Here's a few pictures of my Russian m38 to bring this thread back to life. First we have the nail polish 3 dot sight, then the stock showing inletting for the Timney trigger, the rifle in its current configuration and a pic of 2 actions with stock trigger and a timney side by side. I love the trigger, it has no slop and breaks extremely cleanly at 2.5 lbs.
Bedding the action and floating the barrel are next. Then some better sights or the rocksolid mount and a decent scope. I have an extra bolt I'll weld up into a bent bolt should I decide to scope this thing. Considering I got the bipod and stock as part of a trade I'm into it about 275 so far. The trigger was about 100 shipped and the bedding was 25 or so. I paid 150 for the rifle. I may sell the original stock for 20-30 bucks to recoup a little.

Gotta say, old post in referendum, but Wow, Cosmo, that M39 is pure BEAUTY. I remember fondly looking from that POV for a while...wish it didn't get stolen. Will get another...
Also love the "Tactical Advantages" writeup - very pro! :p

I have a couple questions. I have a mosin but am planning on buying an m44 carbine.

1. Will a sporter stock still alow the full use of the side folding bayonet.

2. I had seen in one place which now excapes me that there is a synthetic stock and hangaurd in the stock mosin configuration (long, sling cuts, barrel bands, cleaning rod hole, ect ect) I was wondering if anyone has seen it and some links to it. All I can find is the ATI sporter stock:cuss: and have looked for the other for quite some time without any fruit.

3. Does anyone have a good link for an origonal, metal, ten round trench mag for the mosin nagant. I hear the best place to find is a gun show but I find it hard to get out to them. I figured this would be the best place to ask this perticular question without people asking me why I need a ten round mag for hunting;) (when I did not even say that is what the firearm is being kept for) Other than that i do not want to change anything else. Thanks a bunch.:D

I agree ^ look at the m44 its the ultimate in tacticality its got a hot dog holder on the front the safety can be used as a bottle opener, the steel buttplate is good for cracking anything or being used as a hammer, and they already have a mag release for quick ammo changes :neener:
