Posters to address VT shooting

I'm not really surprised that somebody didn't fight back sooner. Flight trumps fight when folks aren't trained. Sad.

Warren:
"Shooting fish in a barrel ain't much fun if even one fish has a gun" Along with a picture of a group of people rounded up but with one fighting back.
I think that'd make a great poster. Show 3-4 people huddled behind one person that is lining up the sights directly in the center of the camera.

Oleg,

The first poster says, "could have saved" instead of making the assertion, "sidearms would have made them safe"...

Perhaps the first is a better phrase. A marginal anti I pointed to the posters referred to them disparagingly as "total propaganda" and focused in on, "There is not one single shred of evidence that says concealed carry permits would have saved any one of those students who lost their lives today."

Most of us at THR are going to understand and totally agree with what you mean, but for the opposition seeing these posters, the first phrasing might get our point across a bit better with less whining about a tangential point and ignoring the issue at hand.

for what it's worth...

All these gun control laws are meant to fool you into 1 thing...to FEEL safe when you arent.

Thank-You Lord.....Someone with some moral decency...

So right now it is indecent to present our side?

How long do we wait? A day? A week? Until after all the funerals?

How much of a head start do we give the enemy?

Please this is a tragedy for the school, parents and friends. None of us know the details at this point or anything about the shooter and his motivations. To suddenly turn this into a rallying point for pro or anti guns is disrespectful to the victims and their families! Wait until the facts emerge before passing judgement on what could have prevented this most unfortunate, and tragic event!

The thing about gun or arms control is that it allows ther lowest type of useless person to have an effect on others far above what his skills or personality would allow.

So in effect it is like a jobs program in that it takes someone who has little to no value to anyone else and gives them a position which they could not earn on their merits.

These twits, in a healthy society, would be trapped in their miserable lives with only the option a lonely suicide or maybe forcing someone else to shoot them as they tried to have this type of effect on others. Now though, thanks to politicians and the idiots they pander too cretins can take their uselessness, their pain, and the contents of their personality and smear good folk with it.

All that said I have no idea as to how to make this caption length.

I have a suggestion. Let's not engage in political discourse on the topic while the bodies of the 32 victims are still warm.

Let's not.

Instead, we should mobilize to throw out of power and position every single anti-freedom politician and their cronies so as to avoid these types of senseless tragedies from happening. These political weasels are directly responsible for the carnage that their sorry policies cause.

Trust me, the anti-freedom crowd is gleeful right now, looking for ways to disarm people and utilize this tragedy for their perverse purposes. Those of us who know the truth need to oppose them at every turn and not give them an inch. It is especially true that we need to anticipate their every move and cut them off at the pass.

To do otherwise is to lead to more corpses, warm or otherwise.

I think it is a mistake for the NRA to back off until the facts come out.

People are feeling outrage right now. They will direct their anger somewhere. While the NRA tries to look sensitive and failing to point the finger exactly where it should be pointed, the antis will be pointing their collectivist, frightened fingers at guns.

Those most responsible include first and foremost the doer, and secondly those who purposely and stupidly disarmed the victims.

My thoughts exactly. At first I was sad, and I still am, but now I'm angry the way I was on 9/11. I'm really angry when I think of the anti-gun people using this to keep attacking us with a mess that they should be blamed for. I contacted 16 of my state reps regarding pending firearms legislation this evening, and I'm going to keep up.

I'd use one of the pics of all the cops with all their black rifles with a caption like, "Why were these guns useless against this tragedy? Because they all arrived too late!"

...well said...

...you beat me to it...
I would add those to the criminal list, those that forced those kids to decide between being criminals or victims in the name of "safety"...
They had a right to defend themselves...and it was denied...
Whether or not being armed would have changed things, I honestly don't know...at least they should have been able to decide for themselves

I don't have the picture, but the caption is:

"Bad things happen to good people in safe places...

...and Virginia Tech was supposed to be very safe."

Knowing how I'd feel if the antis made this tradgedy their poster child, I think it's a very risky thing to attempt.

How about an in focus picture of one of the no guns allowed signs (assuming they have them on that campus) with blood splattered on it. And then out of focus in the background a bunch of police and ambulance lights with a stretcher and some sarcastic comment about gun free zones below.

Don't know if this has been mentioned, but perhaps a picture of one of the ambulances outside the building, and the quote from the VT spokesman (Virginia Tech spokesman Larry Hincker was happy to hear the bill was defeated. "I'm sure the university community is appreciative of the General Assembly's actions because this will help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus." ):
"[Disarming students] will help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus." - Virginia Tech spokesman.

Then, below the picture:

EDIT: This is probably too callous.

Instead, "Feeling safe isn't enough"

I understand how some people could be upset that there are families, students, and fellow citizens still coming to terms with what's happened, grieving, and some may need time to deal with this.

However, the anti effort is pretty organized, and you can bet your paycheck several activists and politicians are already salivating to spin this the way they want.

I think people deal with things in different ways, and some people are at the point where they're saddened, angry, and want to do something about it, rather than just be sad, mad and alone.

If someone wants to spend that energy in such a way that they can prepare messages to help school leaders, parents, politicians and the media get a grasp on our general collective thought process, then I don't see anything wrong with that. If you need to grieve right now, and not take any action, then do what you need to do (addressed to people complaining about this thread).

But I think most in this forum would feel that there's a *chance* that these kinds of tragedies could be avoided or cut short, if more law abiding citizens could legally carry in all the places they spend their time, including educational institutions. And in this case, it's not even the state or federal law preventing them from doing so at this school, it's the school itself standing in the way of allowing some of it's students (of age), faculty, employees, and others, from protecting themselves, and those around them.

Again, antis are going to use this, so someone from this point of view better be prepared with their own message. And individuals like those on this forum could be a more productive catalyst for change.

Good luck to all the creative thinkers out here... I hope we can get the right message out...

So how is this news release from bradycampaign.org not "political"?

Nation Again Grieves Over A Tragedy "Of Monumental Proportions"

(202) 898-0792 Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence

Blacksburg, VA – Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, issued the following statement:

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the Virginia Tech University community, and to the families of the victims of what appears to be one of the worst mass shootings in American history.

"Details are still forthcoming about what motivated the shooter in this case to act, and how he was able to arm himself. It is well known, however, how easy it is for an individual to get powerful weapons in our country.

"Eight years ago this week, the young people in Littleton, Colorado suffered a horrible attack at Columbine High School, and almost exactly six months ago, five young people were killed at an Amish schoolhouse in Pennsylvania. Since these killings, we've done nothing as a country to end gun violence in our schools and communities. If anything, we've made it easier to access powerful weapons.

"We have now seen another horrible tragedy that will never be forgotten. It is long overdue for us to take some common-sense actions to prevent tragedies like this from continuing to occur."

As the nation's largest, non-partisan, grassroots organization leading the fight to prevent gun violence, the Brady Campaign, working with its dedicated network of Million Mom March Chapters, is devoted to creating an America free from gun violence, where all Americans are safe at home, at school, at work, and in our communities.

Oleg:
Post the first picture in #3 with the caption: "Who will defend us NEXT time. No one could THIS time. Thank you administrators for making this a "safe" gun free campus".

Oleg:
If you like my idea please don't muck it up with any other images. I think it speaks for itself. Sometimes simple is better.

Wait until the facts emerge
A nut with a gun killed 32 people and injured 28 more - and nobody could stop him because having the means to was illegal. What more facts do you need? Am I/we missing something here?

There are some people who will dance on the graves of victims to promote their beliefs. Best tool I can think of is guilt. Time to make the people who force others into being helpless victims to actually to some responsibility for the consequences of their decisions and feel a little guilty about it.

I wonder how many of our elected officials who promote gun bans are perfectly comfortable having armed body guards and won't go anywhere without them? Wouldn't that make an interesting contrast on a poster?

I second savetheclaypigeons idea about the sheep. Just have a long line of woolly sheep with backpacks heading towards a slaughterhouse.
