Get Universal or No.7.
Universal means universal clays, right?

UNIVERSAL gunpowder handles the broadest spectrum of cartridges for both pistol and shotgun. This is the Clays gunpowder technology designed for 28 gauge shooters. From the 25 ACP to the 44 magnum and 28 gauge to 12 gauge, UNIVERSAL CLAYS gunpowder provides outstanding performance. As with all the "CLAYS" gunpowder series powders, clean burning and uniformity are part of its attributes. Available in 1 lb., 4 lb. & 8 lb. containers.

Universal is Hodgdon's competition to Alliant's Unique. Being that it uses Clays technology, it burns completely even at less than ideal pressure. Since you are making major PF in 40, don't worry about that, you'll easily be up there in pressure to where it burns cleanly. If cost is no object and if you can find it, Universal (Clays) would be great for you.

Otherwise Unique will also easily make major as will Bullseye. By the way if "dirt" means unburnt flakes, you won't get it with either powder at these pressures, but if you mean soot, by all means stay away from Bullseye. It will smudge up your Good Humor white suit as you holster your gun. :p

I talked to a guy this past Sunday at a IDPA match that was loading HS-6 for Major PF. It's a thought. All I load is Minor PF for IDPA using WST. WST is clean, and soft on the recoil. You should be able to make Major PF with WST also.

I can load major in my Tanfoglio .40 with Green Dot and 175gr Lee TC lead.
I used to use WW231, but GD gives a slightly different recoil impulse.
Most of my shooting is Steel Challenge.
Have fun,
Gene
