Powder Suggestions for .45 acp

Just my limited experience, but it seems to me that Longshot tends to like the higher end of the load data. You still need to work up (like always) but my experience of Longshot in 45 is that the lower spectrum doesnt shoot well at all. When I work up near the top powder charges, it starts to smooth out. I now save Longshot for 40 SW and use faster powders for my 45 ACP loads.Hope this helps.

Where did you find Longshot in bulk?

Thanks!
You might want to rethink using Longshot in the 45 Auto. I didn't even include it in my above list because it's a very slow powder, almost as slow as the powders considered "magnum" powders. It's also a very loud powder. I think I would choose a faster powder if I were you. I have used Longshot in the 9mm but the 9mm is a high pressure round and the 45 Auto is not.

4.4 Grains of Titegroup or 4.9 of Red Dot work very well behind a 230 grain LRN. Shoots the center out of the bull if I do my part. 5.3 grains of W231/HP 38 is a close 2nd.Middle of the range works the best in my M&P 45ACP.

All the above are good. I found a few pounds of Herco on sale (and they had nothing else at the time) so I bought it. I like it. Just a little slower than Unique and works great in the 9mm too.

Well,

I couldn't locate any titegroup or win 231 but I did run down some 800-X and some SR-4756 :D

Thanks again for all the suggestions!!!!

WST is my go to for 45. Keep your eyes glued to the powder valley site for components. When stuff becomes available buy what you can to spread the hazmat fee as much as possible. Midsouth has some primers available. Your going to get hit with hazmat anytime powder and primers are shipped to you.

The load data I have calls for either one of these powders. I would love to have some WST and some 231 and as soon as I can find some, I will :)

I have been loading 45ACP for 5 Years & after trying different Powders I went with Ramshot
Silhoutte, Burns Clean.... for my two 45's it's the Best in my Op.

My pet loads are,for200gr.LSWC are 5. 7gr. w231 4.8gr. titegroup and (misplaced the data) greendot. All go through my PT1911 smoothly.

I too like WST for my 45 ACP loads. Works well with extreme 200gr SWC.
I would not, however, consider it to be "clean burning" it leaves a fair amount of soot. What I would describe it as is "complete burning". I also like it because it meters extremely well.

When I have soot on the case using WST, it is usually at the very low end of the load data. Usually cleans up after I get off the lowest loads of the work up.

I have used 4756 in 45 APC seems to meter decent (will meter much better than 800X) Checked my notes and it I was getting about 7.1-7.2 gr with a Lee autodisk and .76 disk. Using a 200gr MBC semi wadcuttter. Shot and fed well in my Commander. If you can get any 4756 I would buy it. Not my first choice but works for me in 9mm and .45

Dudedog,

I have a couple of pounds of the 4756 I also have the Lee Autodisk! I will be feeding them through a Remington R1. Thanks for that info!

As a note Hodgdon lists 7.4 as a start for 4756 w/200 cast and 8.2 as MAX in .45 so 7.2 is on the light side. The Commander slide is probably a hair lighter than full size and my recoil spring currently has quite a few rounds on it so you may need more for proper functioning. The .82 disk should be ok at about 7.5, .88 is close to the MAX. (edited) You can use the Lee adjustable bar (if you have one) or if you want to you can enlarge the .76 or .82 hole a bit if you need a hair more. I have quite a few disks with "custom holes" I put a dab of brightly colored paint on the ones I have changed so I know they are not the stock size anymore. (Plan B is fill a larger hole with JB weld, let it dry then drill it to the size you want, this is a PITA but allows you to use a larger hole that you might not be using for anything else)

Lee lists the VMD of 4756 as .11 so here are some calcs.
My batch is a little off, it seems more like .105 (so they tend to be a little heavier than the calcs show)
Note your mileage/VMD may vary!

I like Bullseye powder in .45 auto loads with 230 grain bullets. I normally use 5.0 grains and average 812 fps 1.245" with plated Berry's and 850 fps or so with LRN bullets.

Getting blind can't read my own info

:uhoh:
OOOPPPSSSS I was sleepy. .82 should be 7.5 ish which is ok. the next .88 is almost MAX. (edited above post, have to fess up)
Got .82 disk and 8.2 grains mixed up in whats left of my mind.

4756 burn rate is between Universal Clays/Unique and Autocomp.
I have used Universal Clays (my favorite.. think clean bruning easy metering Unique) and Autcomp as well but I don't think either are available right now, prefer Universal.

PS I can hear my old English teacher now...Detention-failure to proof read --- aaarrrgg
