I've been looking for a PPKS, off and on for the last, 30 years. Something else always caught my eye and I never picked one up.

Stupidly sold a Ranger PPK about 10 years ago...was too small for my big hands, but the PPKS and PP fit me fine.

So I'm looking again as it's an open spot in the collection.

How are the Smith produced PPKSs these days? We're four years past the recall, has Smith solved its issues? How is quality, etc?

With regard to magazines, do mags for German/Interarms/Ranger PPKSs fit Smith produced weapons and do Smith produced Walther PPKS mags fit German/Interarms/Ranger weapons?

Smith is no longer manufacturing Walthers, Walther has their own US plant now. All mags should interchange between Walther, S&W, Manhurin, etc within the same model/caliber.

As a rule of thumb, the German Walthers and Interarms mags did interchange. However, the S&W mags did not always interchange with the other two and vica versa. It was hit or miss.

I believe that Smith is still manufacturing the PPK and PPK/S pistols in Houlton as per their agreement.

How ever they no longer do any warranty work on them. That you send to Walthers in AR. Their fixing up the mess that S&W makes. I would look for a good Interarms and leave the S&W in the store. Still a problem pistol. My old Interarms just keeps going and going .

Well, I can't/won't argue in general pro or con about the S&W made PPK/PPKS but I do have a PPK/S-1 that I purchased I think it was last year that has been perfect so far in a limited amount of shooting. It seems to be well put together and quite accurate. I hope my "luck" continues with it. Still, if something goes awry it is good to know that I will have to send it to Walther in Arkansas instead of Smith in Maine. Thanks for that information. Much appreciated.
