Prairie Dogs with BP?

Now just musing a bit.... what load in 50 Cal (flint) would I use for shooting Prairie Dogs in SD if I decided not to use my wonderful .223 CZ modern rifle? This would be off a bench.

Use your best accuracy load, mine is 65 grains of 3f or Black MZ. Be prepared to be amazed when you hit a p dog with that .50, depending on range it the damage can be incredible.

Amen to that, I was hunting with my T/C pistol a few yrs back, had a 223 barrel and a 3030 barrel, used the 223 for dogs and the 3030 for deer. On the way back from sitting all morning on a stand I came upon a dog town and decided to take a shot, aimed a bit low and shot through a bit of mound and exploded the dog, the 155gr soft nose really did a number, so I would expect no less from a .50, actually a bit overkill, I'd use a 32 or 36 cal B/P on them.

I would really hate to put a scope on my Lyman Trade rifle but better sights for sure!

Off topic but one time when we were out PD hunting, I had this little Taurus 22 LR for snakes, stainless steel revolver 2 inch long barrel.... if that long. Getting ready to leave and I said "Roger watch this" lucky shot from maybe 50 yards... darn if I did not hit the little bugger!!

I hit a ground squirrel a couple of springs back with a .36, almost tore it in half. Hit a Jackrabbit at around 40 yards with the same gun nearly took it's head completely off.

Yeah them .36 are truely underestimated and underrated. Thats why all my cap n ball revolvers are .36 cal shootint kaido conicals and/or a custom conical i designed. 130 and 140 grained pure lead wide flat nosed bullets really are something special.

did it all the time with my stevens 44 1/2 repo. open sights,peep, and a 425 paperpatched swagged bullet. used reloader 7, blackhorn 209 powder and also a lot of 3f black with 7 grains of shot gun flake powder next to the primer. they all shot well. black powder properly loaded is one of the most accurate powders made.

I don't know about a 50, but a 45 turns armadillo into a big red blob. Looked like I stuck a hand grenade inside it.
