My brother and I have long discussed going to South Dakota to shoot praire dogs. Any suggestions as to where to go or who to contact, wuold be greatly appreciated. Asking for the above info may be like asking an individual where he catches all his fish and we all know what the answer will be. Its a trade secret. I thought I would ask anyway. Thanks

yup, its a trade secret... but, if you can narrow it down a little, i might see if i can help ya. s.d. isn't that big of a state, but its big enough that 'going to s.d.' doesn't leave a whole lot of clues as to where, exactly, you need a town.

when, where...?

Better hurry cause the various state plus USFWS is working to put that stuff out of business.

Years ago we used to go to the Rosebud indian reservation. a $3.75 permit was good for 10 days and almost all land was open. camped, shot, and got sunburned- had a blast. Now, I hear you gotta pay a tribal guide, trespass fees, etc and outfitters have leased some of the best dog towns.

I couldn't narrow it down to an exact town since there arent any near where I go. I would say west river, close to the river. I know there is a huge colony about 10 miles west of the river on HWY 12 but I think its tribal land and they protect them something fierce. I always go to my grandpas place by Eagle Butte but I pretty much wiped out that colony last summer. Anywhere West of the river there should be alot of them. Good luck dealing with the Tribe though.

Hi,
My husband and I have gone around Eagle Butte in the past. The entire area we shot on was wiped out by disease this spring :(, so you may want to check if your area was affected. The landowner called it "plague". He was so happy the prairie dogs are gone, he said it was just like he had won the lottery.

We are looking for a new area to shoot on as well. Good luck! It is great fun and very addiciting!
