i bought a German Model 98 at a gun show a year or so ago for $230.00. its a russian Capture and SN is about 97% matching. only thing that does not match is the barrel band and rear sights.

Recevier is stamped S/42 1936 and has the russian capture marks. i know what most of them mean. Blueing is still pretty good maybe 80% or less i would say, i want to say the mag plate has been reblued because if you look really hard you can see the electropencil marks but they are blued over. Bore is great nice good rifling. it shoots like a dream though i love it.

i checked Gunbroker and most of the K98's they have on there look like H3II compared to mine and they are wanting 300-399 on average. here are a couple pics of mine. Also there are NO import marks on it. I doubt i would ever sell it just wondering what it was worth and if I got a good deal for it.

Looks like a great deal. Last week I ordered a Russian capture 98K from Aim Surplus for $219. It's due to arrive tomorrow and I'll trade you mine sight unseen + $11 for yours. :)

Nice rifle.

lol ill have to pass on the deal but thanks. the guy i bought it from im assuming had alot of work cleaning it up because most of the ones i see are almost black from the grade 4 (cosmoline)

It is just as well you passed on the deal. It seems that between my calls to Aim Surplus and my FFL guy that my dealer didn't order the Mauser after all. So I told him to forget about it. I got a $75 Chinese 98 Mauser a few months ago so ..."close enough".

how much ammo do you guys bring to the range? (per range trip) Or I should say how much do you guys shoot your mausers?

Thanks,
A.C.

As the supply of RC K-98's dry up, it's natural the price is going to go up. I saw some at Military Gun Supply in Ft. Worth and it seems someone is trying to clean them up a bit and charging over $400. I have a YC K-98, I bought years ago for $120. I thought I was getting an M-48, but instead this almost cherry K-98 shows up. Fine with me, the numbers don't match unless they were forced, but the wood and barrel looked like new, even the chrome wrap around buttplate was excellent. he Nazi marks were gone as was the factory markings replaced with the Yugo crest, but all the "wehrmacht proofs were there, and they missed a single nazi proof on the bolt. Late last year, I also found a RC K-98 in a pawn shop for $129. I was going to get rid of it until I decided to "REALLY Clean" the bore, and discovered a really decent bore underneath. So, I'm going to keep it and fix it up. If the stock is really bad, you can get a new one from Boyd's.

Oh yeah, if it's an real RC, then it's likely the import marks are in tiny letters on the right side of the barrel. Tiny inport marks, thanks CAI!

That gun is in really good shape. The wood looks excellent compared to some of those i have seen online. Blueing is good as well. Hold on to it and take care of it. Im sure it will be worth a good amount later down the road.

Whats the recoil like on a 98? Are they pretty safe in general with regards to headspace?
Recoil is stout, but not unreasonable. The round is in the vicinity of .30-06, and the gun is of moderate weight. It will kick, but you won't be detaching your retina, or anything silly like that.

As far as headspace goes, the usual caveats apply, and then some. Any milsurp should be looked over by a gunsmith. Capture guns in particular need to have headspace checked. Ivan was less than diligent in checking everything when they were pulling parts from a bucket, slapping them together, slopping on the cosmoline and stuffing them in the crates.
