I have the opportunity to buy a Smith model 29-2 .44 magnum. It has a 4" pinned barrel, nickel finish, recessed chambers, and is 98%. There are no box or papers, no original grips. It has Hogues and Pachmyer grips. Asking price is $525. Is this reasonable for California? Thanks.

Even though it has non original grips, I would say that is a good price.

I live in N.CA and there is a 6" Nickel 29-2 with original grips and similar conditon, the price on the tag is $750.

$525 would be a good price anywhere and a fantastic price in CA since the 29-2 isn't "approved" so it can't be imported or sold by dealers. The assinine law jacks the price up on guns because if it ain't already in the state you can't get one.

The 4" models are most sought after. Can add maybe $100 for the 4" barrel.

That will be a nice purchase - and these days worth ther investment. Hard to lose too much at all on these earlier N frames.

I was very pleased with a M29-3 6" I picked up at Tulsa show for around similar price and it was tight as tight - tho I wanted a dash two. Still pleased with my find.
