I was at a gun show a few months ago. I got a Polytech AK "SP" rifle for just under 400.00. I researched Yugo AKs and Romanian Aks, I figured that is what I would see. I didnt know the name "Polytech" when I bought the rifle. The action seemed smooth and the barrel was clean and everything was finished nice. So I bought it.

Online, there is very little information on the "SP". What does come up is from years ago. It seems they sold for 350.00 in 1990's. In 2005 one was listed here for 500.00. YES mine has the ground bayonet lug. I want to replace the stock and do the 922r parts.... I am not selling this, I just dont like knowing if I got a good deal. I am happy with it, but usually I can find out more and what they are worth.... In 2008 dollars, what is it worth?

OR with the newer imports available would i be better off to leave the Polytech alone and get a new AK from the gun store? (Romanian or Yugo):D

If I replace the stock (And corresponding parts as required), would it be more valuable with a wood stock (Ironwood) or a Tapco stock (6/Adjustable)?

Polytech made some of the best AK clones ever offered in the USA.

The SP marking denotes they are "post-ban" even though they were made before the ban. They were imported before the ban date, but US Customs held them for several years and when they finally turned them over to the importer they were considered to be post-ban rifles. So, if you want to change the stock on it, you have to play the 922r parts game.

You got a good deal.

MAK90's go for about $500-$550 right now. Yours is essentially a MAK since it was neutered after importation.:(

These rifles are as well made as anything out there, including those overpriced jobs made in Vegas.

500.00 - 550.00 is good, I'm happy with that. That leaves me room to make the changes without putting to much into it.

Should I go Wood or Tapco?:scrutiny:

If you want looks go wood, looks more like the original. If you want versatility go tapco, then it will fit you, your buddies and anyone else you want to share with. If you are short and like to wear thick winter clothing then the wood is perfect!

Wood and steel!

Avoid plastic at all costs.

If you want a folder, get either a Romy wire or spend the extra $$ for an ACE stock.

No plastic! No plastic!
