Hi all! I recently came across a "new in the box" S&W 66-4 4 inch for sale at my local gun shop. It has the original box and papers with it. Timing is perfect and lock up is almost as tight as my Rugers! The price is what I'm concerned about. The shop is asking 599.99. They said the price is firm due to the condition. I already have a model 19-5 and love it to death! As soon as I saw it, I knew I had to give that orphan a good home ;). Does that sound like a fair price? Thanks in advance!

In my opinion I think that's kind of high for a 66. But that is in my area, some areas could be higher.

Thanks for the reply! I was thinking myself that the price was a little on the high side. I'm in South Carolina and I was thinking around 500 would be a fair price. I only paid around 400 for my 19-5 about four years ago.

I really need to stay out the gun shops! I went in there to make a payment on an LCR I have on layaway. Everytime I go in there I always find something I have to have lol.

The shop is asking 599.99.

I've been in the market for an M-27, M-19, or M-66 for the last year or so. From the prices I have seen, the price you quoted is high, but not totally out of line, if it’s in VERY good original condition. Remember that the P&R models are commanding a higher price.

If I really wanted this revolver and I had the money I would go for it, as prices do not appear to be coming down any time soon:banghead:

J&G has the model 64, bobbed hammer for $239.00 and is DAO, to make it true DA, adding a new/used hammer professionally fitted is a good deal in todays market.

$599 for a used 66 I feel is fairly high. Prices are comming down in both the auction sites and shops, even in the forum selling areas. You practically have to give many things away just to get bites. I just looked in the newest blue book for that 66 and in used but new condition, with box, paper work and orig grips, it states $434 to $485. If it is lettered (aka Roy Jinks letter) up to $500.

The gunshop I was at yesterday had a 19-7 going for $499. This one was barely fired with box and all includes. I haven't looked at prices on model 66's but I would think $499 is tops.

Is that one really "new in box" or is it "as new in box".

The tag on the gun says "new in the box." I would assume that means never fired. Even if the gun had been shot, I couldn't tell. Part of me says to go ahead and get it. The other side says to wait, there is always a better deal.

The grips had me a bit confused. They appear to be Uncle Mike's rubber grips. They look just like the grips that came on my model 637 I purchased new. Are those the original grips for the 66-4?

Probably.
S&W introduced Unkle Mike's grips on the 2 1/2" 66-3 in 1994.
Hogue rubber grips added to the 66-4 in 1994.

IMO: $600 bucks is about $100-$150 bucks more then I would pay for that one.

The price seems high but you're getting pre-key lock revolver in top shape without MIM components S&W fans dread. There is no such beast as NIB model 66. It has been out of production since ca. 2004. Early 66-4 should have Uncle Mikes grips while later ones "rubber band" Hogue ones. I looked over fixed sight version -6 with dreaded MIM parts. The trigger pull was exceptional very crisp and smooth DA and SA just like that on my Freedom Arms Model 83.
The essential question is: is there better 6-shot $600 .357 revolver out there then Stainless Steel Combat Magnum with 4" barrel and adjustable sights?

Thanks for all the replies! After some thinking and reading everyone's posts, I'm gonna pass on this purchase. As much as I would love to own it, the price is just too much for what I'm getting. At the same shop, I can get a brand new 686 for $700. I'm just gonna keep my eyes out for a nice used one:D

Good move on holding off. The only way I'd pay $600 for a 66 is if had a rare 3" barrel and was in perfect condition. And Pinned and Recessed. That 66-4 is neither of those. Heck, I paid $430 for my 2.5" P&R 66-1 in Jan '10, and that's when prices about hit their peak (they do seem to be dropping somewhat in many areas). The 66, like most other revolvers, gets more expensive the shorter the barrel gets (save for the 3", which commands a premium over all other lengths).

So I'd have to agree with others; that gun is $100 - $150 overpriced. At $450-$500, it would be a fair deal. $400 would be a sweet deal. Sounds like what has really happened is the shop acquired it at the top of the market, and they are now caught high and dry. This has driven at least one gun shop out of business in my state, after the great gun buying panic of late '08 - '09.
