What price am I looking at to get my concealed carry license?

I mean classes, fees, ammo and the whole breakdown. I want to get this done this summer and I have cash set aside. I just want to know if I have enough yet.

Well, the class price will depend on your instructor. Here in Houston, I've seen it from free (usually to some group; i.e. clergy, nurses, women) to $150+. Some include "extras" - like the fingerprinting - in that package; others, its extra. Same with ammo: some require more shooting than others, but one box seems to be minimum.

The one thing you can set in stone is the State's fee: see http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/administration/crime_records/chl/CHLwebupdatefees.pdf for your particular need.

This link may give you a little more info: http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/administration/crime_records/chl/chlsindex.htm

Good luck...

I got mine a couple of years ago. It cost me $100 for the class, and $150 to the state for the license fee. I took 1 box of ammo (and it was plenty) and my Beretta 92. Sat in class all day, got the fingerprints done (instructor was a local sheriff), and finished out the day with the shooting qualification. Sent my packet in with the $150 cashier's check, and 45 days later (to the day) my license arrived. I've heard it can take up to 90 days, but my wife's took 45 days as well. The links that Quoheleth posted above should have a place you can track the progress of your application once it has been submitted. (They will send you a PIN that you will have to enter, then you can track the progress of the app as it's being processed).

Forgot to mention...saw in the Houston Chronicle a week or so ago that with all the new applications being received by TXDOT the application process is running more like 60-90 days for some folks instead of the 30-45 days.

From the May 8, 2008 Houston Chronicle:

AUSTIN — Demand for concealed handgun licenses has risen nearly 40 percent in Texas in a year, an increase being attributed to many factors, even presidential politics.

Though the exact cause may be unclear, what's certain is that the spike in applications has caught the Department of Public Safety unprepared.

The state is taking a month longer than the 60 days allowed by law to process original applications and 80 days longer on renewals, which are supposed to be handled within 45 days.

So, be prepared - just because you send your stuff in on time does not mean the state will process on time.

The total cost will be ~$240-280 for the class fee + materials and the fee you send to DPS. I took mine in Austin and it came to about $275 total. Expensive, yes, but Texas CHL is like a gold card. It's good pretty much everywhere in the state :).

the fee is $140 unless you meet a requirement for reduced or waived fee. the class is 10 hours long including 8 classroom and 2 on the range.

most classes run $75-150. Cheapest I have seen is one in SA for $75. Some include things like fingerprints and passport photos in the price, so best check into it. Mine was $100 (less than a month ago) and included everything.

You will need 50 rounds of ammo for the qual and if you want to have a license to carry an automatic or revolver, you need to qualify with an automatic .32 or bigger.

Do an all-inclusive class if you can (one that takes photos, fingerprints, etc. all during class time). It'll save you from having to run around town and get the stuff done yourself.

The Sportsmans Warehouse dose the all inclusive thing around here. Not worth all the money in my book considering you have to renew it. Now that the laws have changed I just carry my gun in the car, thats the only reason I ever thought about getting one anyway.

My wife has gotten 9 warnings since she got hers. Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not. Our instructor mentioned that you might get more warnings than tickets. I like to think that she has payed for our fees.

Not worth all the money in my book considering you have to renew it.

It's only a $70 renewal fee and it's good for 5 years. Car carry aside, you can carry everywhere in Texas except:

Places posted with the 30.06 sign (which I've rarely seen)
Places that make more than 51% of there revenue from alcohol (the 51% sign)
School buildings (that's what's defined as "premises")
Federal buildings
Court Houses

You also don't have to do NICS if you have the permit. Some stores reportedly even give a discount to people with the permit.

Aside from the bars on 6th street and University buildings, I can carry pretty much everywhere I go. It's hardly a worthless permit.
