I was seating some primers in 9mm cases, and somehow one got flipped upside down and got seated upside down in the case. I'm afraid to run it through the resizing die and punch it out because I'm afraid it will go off. Is there a safe way to get this primer out to re use the brass, or if not, what's a safe way to get this safe so I can toss the brass?

Chemically, making a primer permanently inert is a hard task. Many have tried, few have succeeded. Your best bet is to spray it with wd-40 and allow it to soak in, rendering it temporarily inert, and use a pin or pick to remove the anvil. ( slip the pin between the anvil and the case lip, pops right out) then, just scrape out the wet paste with a qtip and throw in the toilet. The brass is now safe to decap.

I just did this to make sure it wouldn't explode on me- and it didnt. I can't guarantee that it wont, but I have attached a pic to show you what it will look like when they separate.

Kudos to you for not throwing live explosives in the trash for kids to find, or trying to decap it in a press.

I do that occassionally and it aint no big deal. Really... just pop it out slowly and gently with your decap die. Put another in like you just did only th right way. Primers are made to go off with a quick, sharp impact, like hitting one with a hammer, not a de ap pin in a hand operated reloading press.

Added comment: I've had primers swap ends in both BIG bore rifle cartridges and pistols too, I can remember a few over the years. A 270 win, a 357 mag, 9mm, 45 acp, and all we're usuually done because I was in the rythum and it just happened before I could correct it. They were popped out with the pres too... I'm still here and still have all my fingers, and the press is still working even after 4 decades of abuse. LOL

Go ahead and de-cap it with your die. Do it slow. You'd be surprised at how hard a firing pin hits a primer. I am sure you can pop it out with no problem.

Either way- wear safety glasses please !

I can see the admins/moderators getting ready to hit that "moderate" button as we speak........

I haven't done anything yet. I'm thinking I may go down and try to decap it in the die. I will let you know shortly what happens.

Okay, I went down and just deprimed it in the press very very slowly While wearing safety glasses and standing way back. It didn't go off, but it did have a dent in the primer that worried me. Thanks for the help guys.

Glad you didn't have any problems. Now like what was said above, flip it over and reseat it. I just sat down the other day and pushed out 96 LR primers. I wish I knew if they were magnums or not.

BTW, even on the outside change you did have the primer go off, so what? If you're wearing eye and ear protection the only thing that would happen is you used a primer up without using a bullet... lol

I have never set off a primer when reloading but a friend has. He said it scared the crap out of him but that was the only damage done.

You could have popped out the anvil.

Think a bit , for the primer to go off it has to have the anvil seated firmly to the bottom of the primer cup or some hard surface !

I`m not saying to do it hapazardly they do demand respect & proper safety precautions!

Primers ignite from impact not from slow pressure, press it out then reseat it reght side up.

No it will not blow up!
I have popped one from pressure but I agree it's not the norm & the anvil would need to be supported to detonate.

I've reused a few.

Even if it pops it's not a big deal. I've heard people say it rang there ears but I don't think they are that loud. It is easy to damage your eyes though so keep that in mind.

I've made that mistake a few times over the years and have just pushed it out slowly with the resizing die, no problem. Even if it does detonate, your die has a vent hole that will allow the gases to escape, and, everything is confined to the inside of the die, and the press ram hole through the shell holder.

"Why not just toss the brass with the upside down primer?"

Why waste a case? Primers arent nuclear. They make a loudish bang if you somehow manage to set one off. Ask anyone that's loaded with the original Lee loader hand tool. Most that have used them have popped a primer a time or two while getting used to them. No big deal, but eye protection is good. Primers can easily be removed with your sizer/decap or expand/decap die, as most have said. I seriously doubt you could set one off in a bench press even if you tried.
