primer substitution

with all the panic buying reloading supplies are getting scarce. I loaded some .223 using CCI 450 primers because that was all that was available ( I usually use CCi 400) I dont think this is a problem, the magnum primers are hotter but I tested a few rounds and had no issues with pressure.

But here is something to think about. Small pistol primers. somebody out there may try using pistol primers for .223 and I wonder if that might be a safety issue. might that cause a potential for accidental discharge when the floating firing pin of an AR nicks the primer? I have no idea if this has ever happened . I am just asking. And do pistol caliber AR use the same firing pins ?

I wouldnt do it.

SRP in a pistol cartridge fine.
But not SPP in rifle.

There is a good chance that the firing pin on a rifle will penetrate the pistol primer.

that is another point, and a good one. Pierced primer are not a good thing but with reduced charges there might be a work around. What I am concerned with is AD when the bolt slams forward . An AR always nicks the primer a little but I have never known one to AD. Soft primers may change things. Anybody else?
