Priming on a LCT

I sat down to prime my 32 long brass and decided i would do it on my Classic Turret since i never had before, what a mistake.

I don't know if its because the area in the ram where the primer arm rides is burred and fresh but the arm rarely fell back forward. Seating felt inconsistent, and the primer Hopper deal would hang up while placing a new primer on the arm.

I immediately switched back to the Challenger SS and got em all primed and sized NP. Afterwards I took the ez prime plastic hookup off the LCT to remind myself to never do that again.

I am not questioning your issues, but I have thousands of rounds on my LCT with exactly ZERO priming issues once it was correctly adjusted.

Are you certain the assembly is mounted and lined up correctly? There are some good Lee self-help videos that I use when adjusting dies and performing routine maintenance that are always worth a look-see.

No, I didn't fiddle with the mount, I'm sure I could have adjusted to make it drop them better.

I thought it was weird placement too, mayhaps I'm just used to the side mount of the SS. I have a mirror attatched where it makes for very little room to reach in while the priming assembly is on

Hm. I don't know what the issue is with your setup.

I will sometimes have to activate the little primer slider mechanism more than once to get primers into the cup on the priming arm, but other than that, everything lines right up.

The one thing I don't like is having to apply the reverse pressure on the press arm to get the ram to depress over the primer punch. That gives me tennis elbow after awhile. Consequently, I don't use the press mounted primer assembly as often.

The priming arm sticks for me maybe one out of every 300 for me. Simple solution is I take the arm out and wipe down the back and sides every 100 primes when I refill the safetyprime. Gunk builds on these and sometimes causes it to stick in the ram. Maybe once every thousand I have to wipe off the outside of the cup that holds the primer and send a bore brush down the hole in the shellholder. I don't see it as a big deal.

Other than using the Lee video to align it, as mentioned it needs to be cleaned inside the ram where the primer arm goes up in there, Also clean the primer arm with solvent. If the primer arm and cup are sticking it is either dirty or there is a burr on the rod inside the turret (this is per Lee)
Do not oil it or any lube. I use the large and small and thousands of pistol rounds in all calibers and rifle also, with no problems other than with small primers the last two do not like to feed out of the arm. I have to take it off and manually push them out and then put them in the cup.

When I first got my turret (a long time ago) I took a piece of emery cloth and laid it on the flat bench top. I took the primer arm and laid it flat on the emery. I dropped a bit of light oil and polished/de-burred both sides of the primer arm. The two primer arms I polished (large and small primers) have never hung up in my press, mebbe 16 years...

Priming on my LCT or LCC is my favorite way to prime. Once adjusted properly it's almost flawless.

You would really be sacrificing a productivity feature by not trying the fix (deburring and spraying the primer arm action area with One Shot). Forever swearing off assumes there is no solution, but there is.

Maybe for you. But I have always done batch priming and that works much better for me.


Again imagine how little space is between the safety prime and the mirror.

If your primer arm is sticking in the ram slot, it's probably due to debris building up inside. I usually blow out that slot periodically and also give the primer arms a qhick shot of Hornady One-Shot when I do a change-over. The auto-prime feature works well for me, so I'd check the clearances to see where it tends to bind and free that up.

BTW, what's the mirror for???

Never had much luck with mine either, boxed that stuff up years ago. I also batch prime, do it several different ways. I still use the primer arms now and then, but the plastic primer dispenser thingy - no.

First time user/reloader. Priming on LCT works great. LP priming sometimes not works excellent in "progressive" mode, need to push case into shellholder with a finger.

Small primers work a charm, no issues at all.

One issue I have is with powder measure. It has to be turned so it's over turret, otherwise it will interfere with primer tray.

Springer: the mirror is angled to show me the powder drop. Between powder/expander is a flashlight.

So my process is

Start with batch primed brass
Powder drop/expand
Check powder
Seat/remove flair

As MDI says, if there's a burr (your first post said there maybe might be aburr somewhere, if I read it right) polish it off. We reloaders are tinkerers - that's part of what brings us to handloading. We can fix little things like that. At least that and much more....

I'm a batch primer too, but I use the Lee hand primer (D))

Are we saying the primer is crap because we choose to clutter the area with other contraptions? My flex light has a long neck that comes from another direction. I wouldn't need a mirror, because I reload standing up. I suspect I could improvise a mirror idea without getting in the way of the primer.

Are you using the auto disk riser? You could probably use two of 'em if you really wanted (I don't know that as fact though). Personally, I prefer having the pm over the turret.
