In my opinion, getting these types of groups interested in gun ownership groups, rather than the more traditional right-of-center groups, is the key to expanding gun rights. Preaching to the choir does not expand our base; reaching out to new groups does. I would argue that many libertarian-leaning liberals (e.g. those opposed to expanding the warrant-less law enforcement email surveillance) are our natural allies if we can keep the idea of the importance of personal liberty to the fore.
I also note that the Guardian has observed a positive response from LGBT groups:
