Probably not politically correct, but is it good?

Is the Vepr 12 any good as far as quality and reliablity go? Main use will be fun at range. Already have some 590A1s and a 870P for home defense.

It's Tim Harmsen's favorite shotgun.

If you look at Military Arms Channel he has several very favorable reviews.

The only thing though is that you can't mount an optic directly over the ejection port, it seems that it causes ejection problems.

Other than that it is a great shotgun.

If Standard Manufacturing hadn't announced their SKO Bullpup, I probably would have purchased a VEPR.

As it is I'm waiting on the SKO Bullpup and hoping it is a great shotgun

For range fun or even home defense it is a good choice. Not so much for trap or sporting clays, since the sights sit over an inch above the top of the barrel.

Things I like about mine:
1) The mag goes in like an AR mag, you don't have to rock it like an AK mag
2) Bolt is held open after your last round
3) Because of #1 & #2, mag changes are more fluid
4) Didn't have to change the "furniture" like I did on my Saigas
5) I like the ergonomics
6) For me it has been perfectly reliable
7) External threading for chokes
8) It patterns pretty nicely

Things I don't like:
1) The safety is ridiculous. Instead of being a standard AK safety, it is a piece of metal just above your hand. Don't worry though, it is as sharp as a Samurai Sword
2) Price. Even after doing a few modifications (bolt hold back, adding rails/new stock) my Saigas we still cheaper
3) The cheek weld thing that came on the stock was the first thing to go. I'm convinced that thing was there just for show. I don't remember exactly why it frustrated me, but I do remember smiling as I threw it in the garbage

I stop by Standard Manufacturing's Facebook page every so often, and I don't think they have unlimited resources for designing and manufacturing guns, and it looks to me like they've poured a lot of resources into introducing an AR-15.'

Also, there is marketing hype about snake-skin looking finishes for their guns, but very very little about the SKO-Bullpup.
