I took it to the range today and it had problems going into battery. I had three magazines shooting both ball ammo and hollow points. I had to push the slide into full battery on numerous occasions. What would cause this problem?

dirty chamber, weak recoil spring, damaged slide rails, improperly crimped reloads.
Also watch the ejector on this baby, not the extractor. My 4516 went through many too many of these stamped tin little parts.

I have never experienced this with any of the S&W products I own or have owned. My 5906, bought new, is simply superb, digesting any kind of ammo run through it. I just bought a used police-trade in 4006. Again, no issues. Is this a problem or problems associated with the 4516? I think I'll start with the recoil spring. Thanks for your reply.

The only time that I have had a similar problem was with a CS9 when I forgot to lube it after a thorough cleaning. I lubed the rails and the gun was good to go.

I did a google search and an old THR thread popped up and described the problem and possible fixes. It seems this gun came with two recoil springs, an inny and an outy. I disassembled the gun last night and there was only a single spring. I plan on ordering direct from S&W the correct springs.

Is it Cleaned and Lubed? Sorry guns just will not run Dry,even in the sandbox.
Maybe not enough. It wasn't dirty at all, I should have lubed it anyway and I know better. :banghead:

Yup having both springs will cause that problem. Think about getting Wolf springs to replace them.
I ordered parts for my Model 66 2.5 and the guy on the phone said the new recoil spring assembly needs to be fitted at the factory. He included a pre-paid ship label for me to send it to them. I may just give it a good cleaning and lube  and shoot it again. If it repeats the behavior, I'll send it back to them to fix.

Replace your magazine springs. What color are yours? As I recall there was a bad batch that were either yellow or green. When I went through S & W Armorers school we (LAPD) ran into this problem which was corrected by replacing the mag springs.

If it's s'posed to have an inny and an outy, that makes it a 4516-2 (long beavertail) and replacement springs are only available from S&W; That is to say Wolff doesn't do them for the -2, but the factory springs can also be had from Midway and Brownells, if in stock. (Same springs as for 457 and 4013 BTW).
Cheers, TF

Can't believe this thread is still active, but I have four seven round magazines for this gun, two have black followers and two have yellow followers with the warning engraved on the magazines that they must have yellow followers. All four mags function properly.

This is a -1, so it is a single spring and I did get the Wolff replacement spring and so far, it has been running as it should. :D
PS. I am carrying this as I type.
