When shooting a pump-action shotgun do you want to apply forward or rearward pressure or neither during shooting. I read that with a Mossberg pump to hold forward to decrease wear. But if you hold rearward you can get faster follow up shots. I prefer to hold forward with my 870.

I usually don't push or pull on my 870, I like to hold it neutrally and I honestly don't think it will wear a Mossy or an 870 out no matter what you do as far at pushing or pulling, those are both far to reliable for this to be an issue.

I'm honestly not sure I understand the question.

Having said that, here's my algorithm.

While point shooting, I pull said shotgun tightly into my shoulder
while allowing the fore end to rest in my left hand.

Upon squeezing the trigger, I'm pulling ever so slightly backwards on the fore end, such that immediately after trigger pull, said fore end comes back with a force equivalent to a nuclear reaction, only to get pushed forward again (after reaching the end of backward travel) with equal force, jamming the next cartridge into the pipe.

This entire pump action requires about 1/4 sec or less.

Caveat emptor: make sure to keep your left hand well up on the fore end
to prevent your "pinkie" from getting pinched between the fore end and receiver. :what:  :cuss:
(In general, that only happens once, twice at most.)

I am talking about how you hold the forend during the shot, I guess with a Mossberg the action will come back a little after firing if forend is not held properly which might cause wear & tear on the action. Like if you were to shoot from a rest.

The right arm should be used to hold the shotgun firmly against the shoulder. The left arm is used for cycling and aiming and should be held in a neutral position. Avoid unnecessary forearm tension as it will only tend to pull the muzzle off target.

My $.02.

First, my 870s do not balk when I apply pressure to the rear before the shot. When I do, it seems to take a tiny fraction of a second longer to get on target again. Seems like a tradeoff.

Some 870s may balk, and someother brands also. Best to see what YOUR shotguns does when YOU shoot it. Art rather than science.

If you hold back the forend of an 870 too hard it can balk but you REALLY have to be pulling back on it, far more than you would normally while shooting. I tend to a neutral grip on the forend when shooting and not pull back or push forward and I have no problem with fast follow up shots.

I think I am neutral, but I just shoot at the danged bird and somehow the pump gets pumped. It's sort of automatic with me, don't pay attention to it I've done it so much. Raise gun, shoot, hopefully the bird folds. "Hmm, there's another round in there. How did that happen?":D
