Good point. One that I don't consider since I'm the only human in the houseEvery negligent "home defense" shooting of a loved one could have been easily prevented by a verbal challenge.
A verbal challenge helps prevent you from pointing death at somebody you care about in a high stress situation in which fatal mistakes can be made.
To decide how to best defend, one "weighs options".
That is irrelevant.
There is nothing "passive" about defending oneself with a gun without firing, and that strategy provides a much greater likelihood of still possessing a firearm should it be needed again.
I do not want to shoot anyone unless it is necessary. If you do not agree, we are indeed on opposite sides of the fence.I guess we are just on opposite sides of the fence with this topic.
No one wants to shoot anybody, but when a man kicks in my door to harm my family I will not give him a second chance.I do not want to shoot anyone unless it is necessary. If you do not agree, we are indeed on opposite sides of the fence.
How many people at a time?i have been able on more than one occasion to avoid shooting by speaking to people who entered the house with ill will. I recommend it.
Get out of my house -> Sal de mi casa.So when can we get to the part where the poor intruder doesn’t speak English?
How do you say “YOU BETTER GET THE **** OUT!” in Spanish? Portuguese?
Understand that you may use reasonable force to defend yourself and your family, against an attack that is occurring or is about to occur, but you may not do so unless you have reason to believe that is is immediately necessary to do.No one wants to shoot anybody, but when a man kicks in my door to harm my family I will not give him a second chance.

I doubt that you have any real appreciation for what doing so can mean to you, even if you prevail in the legal aftermath.
One other thing: should the evidence remaining after the fact cast doubt on your account--for example, should there be any indication that the entry, even if forcible, had been innocent--your having posted that you would intend shoot if faced with an intruder could be used against you with damning effect. We have a sticky in ST&T about that.
I have had a very bad man break the door; another pushed his way in and tried to kill me; another jimmied a lock and entered. They understood the point of a gun. Had I fired, my entire life would have taken a different path, about which I can only wonder.
Do you really need Portuguese where you live?
My experience with Brazilians is that they also understand Spanish, which is logical given that a) Brazil is surrounded by Spanish-speaking countries; and b) Portuguese and Spanish are very similar. It’s the national language of Brazil. With our open border, I figure anything is possible.
I have no family living with me, so thankfully I don't have to worry about shooting a loved one by mistake.
Still, be very careful. In a town near where I grew up a cop that lived alone shot and killed his son who was in his 30’s iirc. The son apparently had a gas leak at his house and decided to go to his dads, apparently not wanting to wake his dad he got the hidden key, opened the door and immediately got shot.
Moral of the unfortunately true story, Always identify the target.
