I thought I posted this earlier, so apologies if it shows up as a double post. I found this rifle in a pawn shop and got it at a bargain because it was possibly loaded. I refinished the wood and browned the barrel. I am pretty pleased with the way it turned out. I was all smiles after shooting it this morning. It was more destructive than I had anticipated, might be a tad much on squirrel.

GOOD looking rifle! What brand is it?

Years ago I built a .36 and you are correct, that .36 will just explode a rabbit! Aim for the head and it takes it clean off and partically guts them for you.

It is an Euroarms Kentuckian, proof mark shows it as a 1974. I sure it was a bargain gun in 74 but it seems to be well made comparing it to my other BP a Pedersoli Kentucky flinter.

Hunt a lot of melons where you're from do ya? :D

Just joshin'... the beauty of the muzzleloader is that you can download the powder until you get a potent round that doesn't blow up the game animal.

That photo brings back memories. The first flint rifle I bought was from Dixie Gun Works in 1963. It was the "Kentuckian" in .45 caliber, and I enjoyed shooting it for decades until I moved up to a custom-made flint rifle by Frank Burton of Winston-Salem, NC.

Enjoy your .36 caliber rifle. Most use a .350RB, a few use a Hornady .360 RB, both with a.015" thick cotton patch.

When I saw the thumbnail I thought the melon was a rabbit! But nice rifle and it's prime small game season around here. Got my first black powder kill rabbit with my musket and a 60x60 load of 7 1/2s the other day actually.

Nice gun. I've been looking for a .36 for a long time specifically to use for small game. But if ya'll say its too much for squirrel, I might have to reconsider that idea...

Well no body else asked so I will. Was it loaded??

Yes it was loaded. The first thing down the barrel was a round ball, then powder mixed in oil and a wire brush, another ball, and a patch retriever. I ended up pulling the breach plug and hammering the whole mess out the breech.
I imagine someone dry balled the gun then broke the wire brush off, and later someone else tried to load the gun but could not get ignition with the dry ball in the way.
