I was very interested in the SIG 556R, but with all the issues about FTF and not working with steel cased ammo I've taken it off the table, at least at the current $1050-1100 price point.

CDNN has the PTR-32 that appears to be an HK-93 in 7.62x39 modified to use AK mags for ~$850.

Anyone got any trigger time with one?

Again, problems with using steel cased ammo would mean I lose interest.

Pretty sure they used the 7.62 NATO receiver on this, and trimmed away the front of the magazine well, and inserted the parts necessary to allow the use of the AK magazines.

Thus the bolt carrier will likely be the heavier carrier for the 7.62 NATO round. I do not know whether they are using standard bolt heads, or have manufactured one to properly hold the case head of the smaller Warsaw Pact cartridge.

I'd be interested to hear about the PTR-32 too!
A few years back I had a SW-32 and all I can say is stay away from them!

Special Weapons did use their 93 style receiver and parts kits but their own barrel ... not sure if it was a wrong bolt head, not enough recoil spring or what but it kicked like a Turkish Mauser with a steel butt-plate and machine gun 8mm ammo ... the only way to tame it was use a 2stage buffer with the HK21 recoil pad and then I'm not so sure it wasn't damaging the rifle ... and on top of that it wasn't reliable with anything but a 5 round mag. Supposedly there was an upgrade available for $200 but I dumped the gun when I heard other owners weren't satisfied with the upgrade.

They are over priced for what they are..They are way too heavy at almost 10 pounds..I hate to sound so negative but whats wrong with the proven AK design that we have now?Just a thought..I was not impressed with the PTR 91s either..So maybe its just me..

Here is what the box of truth has to say:

They seemed to like it. Longer sight radius helps, sure its heavy but therefore has much less recoil. They seemed to show better groups with it using Monarch and Wolf ammo than AKs usually do.

Nothing, but I've got plenty of AKs and am interested in other guns too. Using readily available and proven existing mags is IMHO a major plus.

I like my HK91 and Cetme and wouldn't mind having something much cheaper to feed as .308 is a bit of overkill shooting steel plates -- at least until my buddy gets around clearing some brush to make a 2-3X longer shooting lane for us to play in.

Everything I have heard or read about it was positive - accuracy, reliable feeding with the right mags, etc., except that it is a heavy b@#$%^. Expensive, too. As much as I want a PTR in .308, in a x39 weapon the money would be better spent on an Arsenal Bulgy build. But that's just mho, which is worth what you've paid for it. :p

850 goes a very long way in building a 762x39 ar15 variant. If your going to do a conversion gun i think the ar modularity would be a big consideration.
Ditto ... the 7.62x39 Model 1 Sales parts kit and cheap lower I built last summer came in right at $685 with an extra tall front sight post I bought to get it to sight in ... I already had the bipod and handguard with picitinny rail.
