This letter appeared in the Lincoln Journal Star on December 8, 2006. How would my fellow High Roaders respond to such idiocy?

Print gun permit holders

It is my opinion, since it is required for some people convicted of a sex crime to register their residences, and they are printed in the local paper, that addresses of people who register for a permit to carry a handgun should be printed as well. Also, whether the permit was granted or denied, and if denied under what conditions, should be associated with the information.

I feel that citizens have the right to know who among us are permitted to be armed although the unpermitted will probably be of more concern in the long run.

I realize that there are thousands of guns in Nebraska (I only have one) that are used safely, legally and without incident — most of which, I would imagine, are used for sport. Those don’t concern me. The ones that are specifically designed and sold as personal protection, and those who purchase them, are the danger.

It is my opinion that everyone else who doesn’t want a permit to carry a handgun should have the right to know who does.

I will be much more concerned in the coming year about permitted handgun carriers than I ever have been of sex offenders harming me or any of my family.

Ben Kessler, Lincoln

That is so absurd, i'd yell "troll" if it wasn't...what? that drivel was printed in a newspaper?!!

my response would be to the fact that making this list public is going to open up a lot of people to criminals trying to steal there firearms AND possibly causing injuries and possible deaths of both criminals and innocent homeowners/family members and police responding to the incidents.

You should send in a letter.
"I feel that citizens have the right to know who among us are permitted to be armed ...."

Quote the 2A, then tell the writer of that letter to get the phone book out, as ALL peoples have the RKBA

EDIT TO ADD:
Even better, write a letter asking the newspaper to print the names every licensed driver in the state, every week. As THESE permits have a MUCH higher correlation with danger than firearm permits.

The big difference here is that permit applicants have not been convicted of any crimes.

The obvious difference between sex offenders and concealed carriers is that one has committed a crime whereas the other has been screened as an upright citizen.

Sorry, Ettenboom beat me to the draw.

Sad thing is, he didn't need to worry about CCL holders before.

I bet he does now...:uhoh:

*NOTE* Not for any bullets coming his way, that is.

People like that have a deep need to pry into the personal affairs of other people because it makes them feel better about the world in general. These types will ask you how much money you make and how much your mortgage payment is...and if they're not stopped at the door...will eventually get around to asking about your intimate relationships.

I think my response would probably something like:

"How does knowing what I do make you feel any more safe than not knowing? If you're law-abiding and peaceably disposed, you don't have anything to worry about. You'll go through the remainder of your days never knowing it because you'll probably never see it."

"However...If the possibility exists that I'm carrying a concealed handgun for the purposes of defending myself against attack causes you to pause before attacking me, then the gun has fulfilled its primary mission of stopping a fight before it starts, without my having to shoot you and spend ten thousand dollars convincing a jury of my peers that you gave me no other option. We both go home at the end of the day to eat supper and watch a little TV. Win-Win."

"Don't attack anyone. Don't put anyone in fear for their lives, and you have nothing to fear...except someone attacking you without your having anything except your bare hands and fleetness of foot to extract yourself from the situation."

An armed society is a polite society. Yes indeed!

here

they publish permit holders names and street in paper used to publish whole adress stopped that after a "campaign"

In Virginia the list of permit holders is public information available from the Clerk of the Circuit Court's office in each county. The lists are primarily used by pro-RKBA politicians and activist groups for targeted mailings during the election seasons.

I realize that there are thousands of guns in Nebraska (I only have one)

Is it just me, or does anyone else dislike anti-gun gun owners more than just straight anti's?

I can't stand the "They won't take away my duck gun" crowd. :fire: :cuss: :banghead:

As most CCW applicants aren't sex offenders and have done nothing wrong, asking people to have information about them printed for just anyone to see is retarded.

While they're at it they should publish the names of all the people who don't own any sort of firearm. Criminals would like to know who to victimize safely.

I don't see how the terms "CONCEALED carry" and "PUBLIC DISCLOSURE" go together

I also think it's pretty out of order comparing CCWers to sex offenders.

Plus it's a silly idea.

Publishing Names

Publishing the names of gun owners would be no differnent the publishing the name and address of a person writing an editorial in a newspaper. As free speech and gun ownership are protected by the BOR.
For instance....

??? added because I actually believe in privacy and try not to be a hipocrite too often.

Gota love those Liberals!! They are all for privacy rights until they don't agree with you. They protect a 12 year old's right to have an abortion without parental notification but want to list the owners of legally bought guns just because they don't like guns. What is this country coming to?

I have a simple solution for Mr. Kessler:

Lets just legalize open carry w/o a permit. That way you'll know who has a gun because you can see the gun. I sure that this will be a tremendous help to Mr. Kessler as he wont have to spend time memorizing long lists of gun owners.

I could make a much more coherent (yet equally wrongheaded) argument for public disclosure of people receiving psychiatric care, people infected with HIV/AIDS, people who check out communist literature at the library, etc.

I wonder how the leftists would react to that?

The degenerates of the Cleveland Plain Dealer do this for two reasons:

1. It intimidates some, deterring them from applying.

2. It makes it easier for CHL holders to be ambushed, since those who would attack specific individuals KNOW they carry concealed. At least one person has been murdered in this way.

When they started doing this, someone published the personal information of the Editor of the Plain Dealer on a website. This seemed to surprise and discomfit him...
