I have heard of a product called Puff-Lon that is a filler material for black powder cartridges and muzzleloaders. The ads for the stuff make it sound great. I would like to use it in my .45-120. Does anyone have any experience in using Puff-Lon in BP cartridges, especially the larger ones such as the .45-120? Other than real black powder, what powders can you use? What loads? My rifle is a Pedersoli Sharps.

Hodgdon has .45-120 data for several of their smokeless powders.

Accurate Arms has developed loads for their 5744 powder only but I do not find them on the site.

I think Lyman No 49 has data.

Fg black is probably the best, but BPCR loading is an art all its own. Read up at:

Puff-lon is expensive. A friend loads his .450 BPE express rifle with Grex shotshell buffer. Nearest thing available now is Ballistic Products standard buffer.
