Well today I was pulled over! I did not stop at the stop sign long enough. My bad, my fault.

The real scary part was I had my Kimber ultra carry cocked and locked on my hip. Now I have been carrying concealed for a little over three years and this is the first time I have had to talk to the law while I was armed. It kind of freaked me out.

Now I am legal/licensed but it still was just a bit odd. The worst part was I had this HP that just would not get off my case about carrying condition one. "why, why, why" is all he would say. Now my standard answer to why I carry has always been "because I will not be a victom" but until recently I have carried a snub 357 so the cocked and locked has never been and answer I had to have.

No my answer was that the way it supposed to be carried and that I am legal/and licensed to do so. That all I thougt I need to say.

thats the best anwser out there, good for you. Remember they are there to enforce laws and keep the peace not heckle and impose their beleifs on you.

Just give me the goddamn ticket already and quit lecturing me on things that you think you know more about than I do - just because you are a LEO.

I got pulled over by a kid cop one day. He was a highway patrolman and he really looked about 18-19. If he didn't have the cruiser I would have swore he was dressed up in his Halloween costume.

He tried to tell me to never pull over to the left shoulder, always the right. I reminded him that on this stretch of the freeway there was no right shoulder, only a barricade. He went on and on and I finally had to tell him not to lecture me on driving since he had only had his driver's license maybe three years.

I really do try the nice approach but I won't be disrespected or harassed. I haven't even had a speeding ticket or a parking ticket for over 15 years so I don't like being treated like a retard or a criminal.

Sorry but that's how I feel.

I've had a cop freak out when he noticed my 1911 was cocked and locked.
He screeched,"Why in the WORLDDDD are you carrying this gun like this!!!!"

This was about his third screeching episode accompanied by a little dance and I was a bit tired of it.

I replied,"That pistol was designed by John Moses Browning to be carried exactly like that. Anyone who is adequately trained in the use of that pistol will tell you that is the correct way to carry it."

His partner told him,"He's right. I used to carry a 1911 as a service pistol."

Didn't hear another word out of him during the entire stop.

I always stick both hands out the driver's window up to my elbows and clearly show both hands empty as soon as I get the car stopped. A cop's job is hard enough without having to worry about law abiding me.

Doing that usually leads to a conversation about their tough job and my support for them. Which usually leads to a warning, not a citation.

Well I am not real impressed with my local law. I in generally have all the respect in the world for them and the job they do but here in the blackhills there is a real problem with the tuff guy syndrome!

So we train to shoot and be safebut we never talk about what the proper answer to these kind of questions. I know in my heart and mind why I carry but to articulate it is a bit tuff. "I carry because I will not be or allow my friends and family to be victoms with putting up a fight!!!" this was told to me by a retired sheriff's deputy and this has been my answer every since. So if there are any suggestions I would appreciate them.

All of you are wrong.
Carrying with a round chambered, cocked and locked is too dangerous, and totally unnecessary.
None of you have obviously been assaulted, because you would KNOW that all you have to do is say, "wait, hold on, I need to chamber a round so I can defend myself." Everyone who has been there knows the person who is attacking you will politely give you ample time to do so.

DUHHH.

:neener:

This accompanied by Yes Sir, No Sir would be my choice of replying.

I do like rfwobbly does. However, I won't take mistreatment from a police officer. Most times, the side of the road is not the place to assert yourself. Handle it through official channels if the situation warrants it.

Some cops are idiots. Some cops are bullies. Most are great guys and girls.

Most don't know much about firearms besides those which they have had to qualify for duty carry. And most of them don't go much beyond the once or twice per year qualification level of training. Something to keep in mind.

If I am ever ordered to disarm, I have no qualms about asking the police officer if he or she is trained in how to safely handle my particular sidearm, and then be prepared to give verbal directions of suggest not attempting to mess with it. I really don't want to be shot by a well-meaning officer b/c of ignorance.

Yeah I usually keep my hands on the wheel and if they ask for something in the glovebox give them advanced notice that I'm going to open it and grab whatever it is.

The answer to any "why" question I get about my gun from a cop gets the answer "the same reason you do".

My answer would be, "That's how I've been trained at Gunsite."
unfortuneatly, 97% of the police officers would have no idea what or where you were talking about.
tat2endangel. your reply was direct and to the point, good for you. and i think that at least 99% of us here, would agree with you. locked and cocked is the ONLY way to carry.

Nope you all fail. You are all no gos at this station:

Proper response

Officer, I'm not comfortable answering any questions W/ out my lawyer present. Are you detaining me or am I free to go.

BTW how'd the cop find out you were armed ?

I keep my hands on the wheel. If you stick your hands out the window, what happens if you really have to use your hands for whatever reason? Maybe, for example, you forgot to put the car in park or maybe you forgot to turn down the blaring stereo. So, without thinking, you pull your hands in as the cop is walking up, or maybe you pull your hands in thinking the cop knows that you need to put the car in park, or maybe your dog is about to jump out the window, etc...not good. Anyway, I've been told by numerous cops to keep hands on the wheel. To me, hands out the window would look something like, "OK, I robbed the bank, and I surrender."

BTW how'd the cop find out you were armed ?

In some states, including Arkansas where I reside, you are required to present your CHL along with your driver's license. Besides, when they run your plate they are going to know you are a CHL holder and will expect you to be armed.

If you don't tell them then they will have no idea what is going down and will be prepared for the worst. If you are licensed, why not tell them. "I am a CHL holder, sir, and I have a firearm (pistol) in a holster on my right (left) hip. What would you like me to do?"

Then, do whatever they ask, within reason and within the law.

SD concealed carry laws say i have to tell the officer that i am armed. He kind of got big chested grabbed my arm spun me around and over the hood of the car then asked me where it was. I keep my hands on the hood told him it was on my hip and in condition one. He took the gun from the holster and that is when he started to bug out about it being cocked and locked. 7 in the mag 1 in the pipe and 7 more in the mag in my watch pocket 15 rounds total of 230gr. Fedral Hydro-Shok. The first words out of his mouth were "what the hell are you doing carring this gun like this and with all this ammo on you" then he looked at the ammo and asked why hollowpoints. I wasnt about to get into no kind of confrontation with him so i just keep replying that i was legaly able to carry the firearm and that condition one is the proper way to do so!!

Why were you out of the car?
No right to man handle you.

I have been pulled over and reported being armed... NEVER have I had that kind of response.
