The LCP is "good enough". I carry mine (max). The 42 is much better quality but is indeed larger. I have no reasonable, higher quality alternative to the LCP series than has already been suggested. Nothing in production, anyway. Maybe one of the Kahrs, but they don't have as good a rep for support as Ruger does, and if it doesn't work from the start you are at their mercy.
When I was considering adding a better quality pocket 380, I considered the M&P Bodyguard, but reports were spotty also and I really like the longer barrel offered by the 42. So that's what I added. Runs good so far and does not rattle like a cap gun. Still like and carry my max, but it's just a tool if you know what I mean. I had my share of rust issues, accuracy issues, lock back issues, etc. Never any failures to feed/fire/eject. So it's good enough. But I wish Ruger had made it higher quality, in this way:
A barrel and slide lock up that does not move around
A slide to frame fit that does not move around and rattle
Magazines that consistently and without question lock back the slide positively when hand racked from empty (always works from live fire).
A better finish than the cheapest possible black oxide.
Things I actually like about the max:
It works except for the inconsistent empty mag lock back thing
It is light and fits in a pocket with a good no-snag draw.
10 +1 in pocket.
