My grandmother's boyfriend came by today wanting to sell me a rifle. It's a Marlin lever action. It looks to have a 16" barrel. It says on it "1894CS", "micro-grooved barrel" and "357 Magnum or 38 Special" on it.

He wants $190 for it. I haven't a clue what its worth. Where can I look to find out?

In what condition? Average used prices range from $400+ new down to $190 or so in 60% condition. New, that would be a very good price. Well used, it would be OK but no bargain.

If it's in good shape, snag it!

It looks really good. There's one place on the top of the barrel in front of the adjustable sight where the black paint is gone about the size of a dime. The wood is in great shape. Its pretty nice.

The CS was the designation for the 1894C til abt 2001. Bbl is 18 1/2" from the factory. If it has a front sight hood, or grooves for one if missing, it's post-99 manuf. $190 is a v. good price if the condition is good.

I'd say buy it...

The wife gave me a Marlin 1894C for our anniversary. I was watching her out the den window. She pulled into the garage and popped the trunk. At that point, she pulls out a flat box. I think, Hummm... something for me to "put together". She just walked into the house and handed the box to me. It said "Marlin" on the end. I opened it at "warp" speed...and there it was. The levergun of my dreams.
Deep, DEEP blue finish. ~Lump in the throat time.~ Oh, and for some reason, this is my ONLY rifle with which I can see the sights perfectly WITHOUT my glasses. Now, Why would that be? Oh, the round I like best is the Speer .357 mag 170gr "GDSP". Big flat lead nose. Copper jacket. Nice.

If it's any kind of decent condition, it's a must-buy at $190.

I'd buy a couple of 'em at that price if I could find them.

Cool, one could take the lever off and get a good bore light to look into the bore and chamber. While the lever is off they look to see how much of the ejector is worn and they could feel the play in the bolt better. This will give an idea of how much use the rifle has had. A lot of these guns have only had a few dozen rounds put through them.
