As much as it makes me want to vomit just thinking about it, I'm contemplating picking up a Cali legal AR-15.

However, I may be moving out of state in the near future(depends on a possible job opportunity), and I'm curious as to wether or not I'll be able to re-modify the rifle to its 2nd amendment appropriate configuration once I leave this hellhole.

Basically, I don't want to waste the money on it if I won't be able to change it to be able to accept detachable mags once I'm out of Cali.

Your input and info is greatly appreciated.

P.S. I've considered the Mini-14 and SU-16s but I just don't like them that much and the M1Aa are just a little too expensive for me at the moment but any other suggestions would be appreciated.

get an off-list lower and pin a 10 round magazine in there. Don't get the 'cali legal' one where you have to flip it open and feed the rounds in the top. when you move, you can simply un-pin the magazine and have at it.

Are there any sites that I can go to to order an off list lower or do I need to go to an FFL that knows the law? Once I have this off list lower can I get any upper for it? I really don't know all that much about AR's. I've been doing searches on OLLs but I'm kind of confused. I don't really understand what I have to do for it to be legal and how I go about acquiring it.

Please excuse my ignorance.

california, as you probably know bans guns by name and by features. due to the sheer number of ar-15 lowers out there, not all of them are on "The List". it is therefore possible to build a cali-legal AR-15, as long as it does not violate the features list (pistol grip, >10rd mag, etc). the CA DOJ maintains a list of guns banned by name. all you have to do is find a ar-15 lower not on this list, and build from there. I don't know of any websites that specifically sell off list lowers. you're local FFL would probably be more help there.

once you have the lower receiver, you're good to go. Since the lower receiver is, legally, the gun, no other parts are regulated. just be careful not to violate the features list when building your gun. the simplest, and, IMHO, the best way to do this is to pin the mag so its legally "non-detatchable". this allows you to keep the pistol grip.

One other question. Once I receive the lower and it has been put into my name, does the upper have to be sent to an FFL as well or can I have it sent directly to me??
