I picked up a Sig P228 today, and I must say I absolutely love it. I only have one issue about it or more of a concern how does the carbon steel slide compare tote 229 milled stainless slide. Is the carbon still a cheaper less durable material or vise versa. I paid for this pistol was that a fair price for it.

The P229 was engineered from the ground up for the high pressure of the .40 S&W. To better withstand such pressure, SIG decided to mill the slide out of a slab of stainless steel. Very strong (and pricey & heavy) construction.

The P228 has always been a 9mm handgun. As such, the slide is a tad less robust and utilizes stamping to a degree.

Technically speaking, yes, the P228's slide may be less durable than that of the P229. But, even for a high volume competitive shooter, there should be no practical difference in longevity as long as only in-spec rounds are fired through it.

Die hard Sig fans LOVE the P228 for its balance & handling as compared to the more top heavy P229. Very nice pistol you have there.

I would not sneeze at either one of them I have the 229 and it's great and if you frequent the sig Forum you will also hear lots of good things about the 228.

I always hear the p229 is one of the best Sigs out there, even though I've never fired one myself, so I think you have a great gun there.
